Sid.. I'm still lost as to how you got hit in the knee and how you think the thighrise has something to do with it..
In the above picture, you see the thighboard completely protects the knee from above unless you don't have it strapped to your leg for some reason...
And the above picture shows the landing gear and how it relates to the thighboard... if your leg is bent at all, the thighboard should have complete closure above your knee, in correlation with the landing gear... now if you are sideways to the puck... sure there is a gap that the puck could get in there.. but it's very slight... Like I said, in over a year of wearing my 4000's, I've only had one puck sneak back there with any force at all. I took one to the knee but it was a fluke because I was not even close to square.

Finally, I am back from my trip so it's picture time...
To recap what I ordered:
SP1000s, 11" wide, 32"+2", quick release straps
NHL legal gloves
The colors are white/sport gold/black in case it's not obvious from the pics:
My old leg pads were RBK 5Ks, so these are a serious upgrade. I also like the gloves a lot more than my Battram Verge set. The trapper closes much more naturally (and easily) for me, and is noticably lighter. The blocker feels great as well, and is much easier to hold a stick with than the Verge, which doesn't really have a large enough thumb/sidewall indentation (the part that the handle of the stick usually goes through when you are holding it) and feels restrictive to my hand/fingers. The Smith blocker feels a lot like my older RBK 5K blocker did, which despite being cheaply made actually performed pretty nicely.

Jim,
Thanks for the complements, yep I'd say my knee hits pretty close to dead center, maybe slightly lower. Don't forget that 17.5" was my floor to knee rather than ankle to knee.

Waycool,
Yep, that is Pete's NHL legal blocker. Main difference other than size is the flat sidewall that you see in the pic.

adm,
Pete goes fta instead of atk.. ekk then mine is a 20 in what a 36?
currently i am in 32" ******* matrix 2 with the knee hit dead center of the cradle.
i will be will give Pete all the measurements and I am sure the pads will be perfect.
Smith makes the most awesome gear.. Period!!
congrats and cheers to the new gear!

The only mod I got on my blocker was a bigger glove... I have big hands and my fingers bore through the tips on my bionic blocker, the demo sauer set of gloves felt similar with tension and I figured after a year or so, I'd have seams coming undone... so Pete got me an XL nash glove for my blocker to accomodate my big hands.

After two years of wearing Smith's I've only been nailed in the knee once, until tonight when I got hit twice! First one was in warm ups on a two on one drill where i butterfly slid across and took it in the left knee, and the second one was a wrap around that nailed me in the right knee. I don't know what was up with my thighboards!

My set almost done...
Gave Pete a call yesterday and my set will be ready to ship early next week. I placed my order by e-mail so it was the first time on the phone with Pete. I can now confirm what you've been saying: Pete is a very nice guy. Add another week for shipping and it's here.
And YES, I will post pictures. There's a blue wave coming...

Salut waycool,
No problem if you want to see them. Anytime you come to the Montreal area just PM me few days ahead. I'll also try to make a review (out of the box, first games, break in, after a few months etc...).
À bientôt.
