Why the quick release straps instead of the the leather?
I was considering getting the leather calf straps on my 4000's
instead of the quick release..
just curious, currently i have quick release and just think the leather snug up
easier.
so, i have been trying to decide.. leather or nylon straps?
Do more pros use leather or quick release?

Mostly I got them because I had heard other people say they had no problems with them, and obviously they make it easier to put the pads on. It may be so that the leather straps can be made more snug, but so far it seems like the straps on these can be loose enough that it won't matter.
As far as I have seen, most pros use leather.

Here are a couple more "open back glove" pics for you:

quick release clips v. leather.... I adjusted my straps a total of 3 times prior to being totally happy with rotation.. that was day 2 with my pads.. I've had them over a year now and I've never had to touch a strap or buckle other than to clip or unclip it! Absolutely zero complaints about the quick release setup! My last pads were roloson pro-return bionics and they had full leather straps, after 3 years, I had a boot strap break but after a year they were already pretty worn and crusty... I'll stick to nylon straps with the quick release clips. The ones that Pete uses aren't cheapy plastic ones.. I think they are nylon something or another which makes them more durable.

I finally got to try out my new gear tonight. The pads were great, I just adjusted the straps once the other day in my apartment, and they were perfect during the game. No problems with rotation or slipping off the landing gear or anything.
The gloves are really the highlight though, especially the trapper. It closes perfectly and feels just the right size and weight on my hand, as does the blocker. At this point I can't imagine using any other brand of gloves in the future.
The only slight bummer was that after the game I noticed that a skate had made a small (1") cut in the binding on a bottom corner of the blocker. I just put a little piece of white tape over it and it's barely noticable...should I put some Goop on it or something to help keep it from getting any worse?

Well, I've had my new Smiths out on the ice now for about 10 times so I think a short review is in order. My previous goalie pads were Koho 570s. Before that, Bauer 5s.
I ordered 4000s with the 2000 graphic. The sizing came out to be 31.5+2. Everything else about the pad I ordered stock. Right out of the box I could easily tell these pads were a lot lighter than my Kohos were.
It took me a couple of games to get the strapping just right, but I feel that I'm almost there. Rotation is a snap and having the flat face has allowed me to "aim" my rebounds much better than before.
I am still getting used to having a knee lock as my Kohos did not have one and I wore those pads quite loose. Each game I feel more comfortable with my Smiths, including getting used to having a knee lock (I know I could take the knee lock off but I'm afraid that I would bang my knees on the ice without the lock in place). I have noticed that in my games I haven't been beaten down low much at all...I can't say the same about my glove side, blocker side, and any other side I get scored on lol. I will give a more in-depth review in another month or so after I get some more games on them.

Just out of curiosity, were you directing that question admanimal or myself? I didn't want to answer and find out you were asking admanimal

Well, my ATK is 15" and my FTK is 17.5". I would ask Pete. He'd be able to give you a definitive answer as to what size goalie pad those measurements fit in. The only mods I got were custom sizing and the 2000 graphic. Sorry, I'm not real helpful in the mods department. Just out of curiosity, what mods are you thinking about?

Barren you bring a smile to my face... I think you've got the most photographed set of gear on this board. You truly are in love with your set of SMITHS!
