Does the new 5000 pads and gloves have anything different about them then say the 4000? I do not know much about Smiths other then the 1000 is very simialr to a Velo. I tried looking back in this thread but I couldn't find anything that talked about the differences with the new 5000 line up.

Go back to the 50-55 page mark. The pics say much about the difference. The strapping is more angle customizeable(?word ), and the thigh board strap is improved. The top and toe is more squared. The channel wrap is different and the pad is thinned out...so it all says in the thread. But Pete is better off in answering those.

I didn't quite get the difference in the gloves, so i don't know myself.

The 5000 series is pro spec.

Ok, thanks Rich. Yeah...I can see the differences you are talking about in the pads. They look sweet. Do the flat face Smiths play like any other flat face pad out there? Kinda look similar to the Sentry. As far as the glove...yeah it looks the same to me as the other models.

Smith 2000 request...

I recognize that I may take some flack for not posting this within the Goalie Doctor section. However, I have been researching the subject for about an hour and I am unable to come up with an answer for my question regarding my Smith 2000’s. (I did find a couple posts that addressed the issue but did not seem to fully address my scenario.) Therefore, I decided that the best audience would be a group of my fellow Smith peers…

I continue to have problems making my pad completely rotate to a perfect seal when I butterfly. I have had my 2000 for their 3rd season now. During that time however, the only remedy I have found is to tie an extra 1-1.5 inches of slack/knots on top of the sliding toe bridge as well as wear my skate strap (threaded through the heel cowling not the mid foot) so loose it is almost to the last notch (2nd to be exact).

The other actions I have taken are to remove a knee lift (just two now) and to play with my strapping system from conventional to the butterfly system and vice versa. However, I prefer the butterfly strapping system for the top two straps and would like to keep using it. Of note as well, I am using a 37+1 and I believe that my next set could stand to be 1 inch smaller. So, I am suspicious if my pad height may be to blame as well. Also, I could stand to gain some flexibility but my last set of Boddams did not have this issue.

Therefore, I am hoping that someone will be able to give me some advice on how I may wear my pads tighter for performance reasons while still getting a better seal in my butterfly--instead of the rotation that gives my pads a “V” effect while in the butterfly. Currently, I believe I am cheating myself out of the purpose of the sliding toe bridge by wearing my pads so “sloppy” loose…

My last question and it may be the problem:

When you butterfly, do you slide your feet on your side or do you drop in front of you?

I mean, do you push your feet toward the boards, therefore your knees hit the ice underneath you or do you just drop foward on your knees?

If you slide your feet on the side, I give up I don't know why you're having problems. But if you drop in front of you... That's it! Your problem is that, you'll need to work on your butterfly technic.

2 videos here:
First, dropping foward (Martin Brodeur)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwDxf2z_UXc

Then sliding feet:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8_RhENnhZQ

See how Brodeur drops in front of him while Lundqvist drops underneath himself (that's the best description I can think of). Lundqvist's body doesn't move at all when he drops down.

I think chakal summed up the problem to be if there is one. If that isn't the problem however, tried strapping your boot strap differently. I have a VERY wide bfly and tie my sliding toe bridge as tight as possible and get perfect rotation every time. My trick however, is to strap the boot strap through the mid foot of the skate cowling. I strap mine in the 7th knotch of the strap so they are tight but allow perfect rotation. I experimented with my b-fly and even when putting the boot strap in the heel of the cowling all the way in the last knotch of the strap, I was denied comfortable rotation. I would suggest trying the mid foot boot strap.

^^^ AGREED!

Of course, you could take advantage of an obvious loophole and order them 6 weeks before the wedding. That way you don't actually GET them before the wedding.

Does anyone here use the butterfly strapping set up, as opposed to the standard set up?

Is the butterfly set up really better? Ive been wanting to try it out, but i keep snapping the plastic pin things. Dunno if its worth the chance.

I use a hybrid with one knee strap attached at the top of the calf and the other directly across from the knee lock. It's much better than the standard setup. I didn't like the full butterfly because I like a bit of tension behind the knee. The strapping setup is purely personal preference; one is not better than the other.
