Maybe never, since nobody in the NHL wears that color scheme any more. Just a guess though.

Has anybody bought or used a set of the 7400 v3's? I'm just wondering because I'm really interested in buying a set and I wanted to see what people thought. Thanks

Ok guys get ready for a long post. I've pretty much got my heart set on Vaughns or Eagles. I'm going to get a job this summer to pay for a new set of pads/gloves, but I've got sizing questions. My ATK is about 17.75 (5"10) BUT I strap my pads very very loose. My boot strap is only on the first hole and everything else is very very sloppy. I don't use knee locks or anything like that. Also I want to get the toe or the pad completely squared off and add a boot riser in there to prevent the square toe from interfering. Also I want the boot to be rock hard to prevent pad "sinkage" All this will change the way the pad sits on my leg. I'm currently in 33+1 Summits. I'm at the top of the stacks with a 1" boot riser in the pad.

I'm thinking 34+2 with all the stuff I'm getting done to the pads. What do you Vaughn guys think? Also what's a rough estimate for the following mods. NO I'm not getting a whole bunch of mods to be cool, they are there ONLY to make the pad more COMFORTABLE for ME.

Open leg channel/ no flaps on leg area.
No balance stabilizer.
All nylon straps.
Top strap placed 1" below knee.
Knee block instead of stacks.
Strap running through knee block.
No knee lock.
2 nylon calf straps.
Hard stuffed boot.
Squared off toe.
All black nylon.
No thigh rise flap.
Nylon in leg channel. (No diamond grip)
No graphic on inner calf or knee.
Hard stuffed shin/boot. (Make rebounds "harder")
Thinned out pad by 1/2" (To make the pad lighter)
Iceberg graphic. (Halak colors of course.)
Pro logos. (Cleaner look)
7"boot.
11"width
34+2 (35+2? 34+3?)

I'll repeat. I'm not getting a whole bunch of mods to be cool, they are there ONLY to make the pad more COMFORTABLE for ME. Ok maybe a few make the pad look better but oh well.

Also how much will removing the upper break stiffen up the pad? I love the flexibility in my Summits and I'm not sure if I should keep the upper break for flexibility or remove it so the pad will hold it's shape longer. I've got a wide butterfly so I can use the 2 piece outer roll if thats better. Can someone provide me with an estimate of how much these will cost? I'll most likely be in midget rep next year, so I don't want to buy 8ks and have them fall apart in half a season.

I know, I know....I'm 14 I'll outgrow the pads within a year, but I'm a GSBB member! I'll buy new pads after a year anyways!

Thanks guys.

Zay, your list of mods is extensive, but looks ok.

Are you under the impression using harder foam will deaden rebounds? I'm thinkin it will have the opposite effect.

The only one I can see being a problem is "Open leg channel/ no flaps on leg area". When I first got my V3's and was playing around with loose strapping the outside leg channel flap folded in on me, essentially moving it out of the way like it wasn't even there, and it made the straps considerably less comfortable - and those were leather straps, I'm guessing the nylon ones would be even worse, so I can't recommed that particular mod.

Correct height will depend on what you do with that boot riser.
Why no balance stabilizer? It really does work. Particularly with loose strapping you may find they don't face up vertically when you 'fly.

If you're getting new pads in a year, and you like flexible pads, why consider getting rid of the upper break so the pad will keep its shape longer? HD foam in the inner leg area will accomplish that and not impact the flexibility at the breaks.

One thing to consider is getting the outer roll thinned, this will reduce weight, mobility and flex.

No, he wants harder rebounds, didnt you read his post "Hard stuffed shin/boot. (Make rebounds "harder")"

Harder or faster is what he meant, like RBKS or anything with a EPP structure.

I can tell you right now a 34 wont work, I have a ATK of 17.5 and fit into a 35 nice... but 34 my knee when I went down, made the thigh board angle up... not straight back like its supposed to do. you will need a 35 perhaps a 35.5 since your growing... but why not get a set of used 35+1 or 2 from here and then sell them when you get taller, no sense in ordering custom now, hell by the time u get them they may be too small !! seriously, that has happened to several goalies here when they order right before the season, takes about 16 weeks to get pads and then they come in too small.

zay, If the mods are free I'm all for you getting them. But if you have to pay for them, I don't think its worth it.

I'm not trying to rip on you and some of my information may be wrong, But I don't see the point of 1400 pads mods that would cost you done to them when you play house.

First of all, it's not about price or level of play. Zay seems to have a passion for goaltending and gear and if he wants to work hard and get what he wants, why question it?

Second of all, he wants his own new pads so why anyone suggests buying used is beyond me. Sure, it's a good option if you are looking to get a good price but if he is fully prepared to work all summer for these, let him!

Thirdly, I really hope nobody suggests going with a smaller manufacturer. I have a Vortek glove (small manufacturer) and I love it, because I wanted a Vortek glove. I didn't choose it because I asked for advice about a V3 or something and get ten "get a Vk7" replies. I chose it because I wanted it. Smith/Vortek/Battram/Viper are all great, but if the kid wants Vaughn, let him get Vaughn!

Four weeks ago I order a set of V3's in a 35+3 - I have a 17.25 ATK and narrow butterfly. As a suggestion, I would not order pads without trying them on first. I also tried on a TPS Summit and needed a 36, and RBK PII Turco break and needed a 35, a Brian's Beast needed a 36 and a Sher-wood 9990 and needed a 34 - and my knee didn't change height

Go try on some pads.
