Wait, you're going to spend $600 for an overhyped disc format that's not standard instead of a decent mask?

Not much of an upgrade. That thing is going for a song and a bowl of soup these days.

I had an itech in peewee hockey and it ended up taking a shot in the cage and it broke the actual part of the mask where the cage connected. It didnt brake the cage it broke the actual mask. And this was a shot from an 11 year old.

For the people that are worried because a straight on slapshot broke their mask, please re evaluate what you are saying. If the mask had not broken, all that force would be translated to your head and quite possibly could have caused a concussion. When a mask breaks, you should thank your lucky stars that it did it's job, because if it hadn't, you would have SEEN stars.
Just because something broke doesn't mean it didn't work....
Otherwise cars wouldn't have crumple zones to absorb the impact. That's exactly what a mask does when it breaks.
On another note, isn't the lawsuit regarding Itech about the failure of the CAGE and not the helmet?

A mask should "do its job" without breaking - a crack in the shell may be unavoidable, but splitting in two is inexcusable.
The cage should be the 'crumple zone', not the shell. A cage should dent, but not break. A broken wire stabbing you in the eye is not a cage that's "doing its job"
The shell should be like the passenger compartment, which should not be penetrated by impacts (i.e. the dashboard shouldn't break your legs)
A mask breaking on low level shots is not a mask that's "doing its job"

Wrong. Masks are meant to deflect the impact. sure once in a while something can happen that breaks a mask bu 99% of the time a break is proof that the mask was not suited for that level f play or was not cared for.
AsBC said the mask is the cage in the car. it is in no way meant to crumple around your head. It is meant to absorb and deflect any and all impacts so as to stay together and protect your head.
The cage can bend slightly but again with the newer cages this is becoming less of an issue i think.

you want a first hand account? me. My itech 1200(the non painted version of the 1400) did not breka but I received two concussions while wearing it before I could replace it. Sure, tha mask might not break on a good slapshot but when the plastic flexes its flexing on your head. So stop arguing that the 1400 is really great when you asked for honest opinions why it was dangorous ok? Everyone's just trying to help you.

Sorry, I just now saw this. You should seriously consider giving up being a goaltender with this attitude and/or financial restraints.

Honestly, when it comes to your noggin why the hell are you even questioning on wether to spend 100 bucks on a mask that has been proven to be a liability to anything but the softest lvl of play ( do a friggin search if you want reasons why ), or spending more cash to protect the most important thing in your body. There should be no question whatsoever. So quit damn whining about answers. Do some research, buy a good helmet, and go play hockey. It's that easy.

For less than that Widowmaker you have, you could get a nice combo setup on eBay. I've experienced less "ringing" in my SK2000+GL100 setup than I have in any mask I have had (granted, all mid-range masks).

Here's the fact:
Despite all the heresay, it's ACTUALLY happened to me. I used an Itech 1000 (which is basically the 1200 now) for 2 years of ice hockey. It was C2 level league, with a little C mixed in, so it was basically full of old goobers. I took a good number of shots to the head and I've had no concussions or whatnot.
Fastforward to the summer, I'm playing ball hockey in the local league. A BALL hits me in the forehead of my mask. It cracks straight down the middle. It was probably weakened extremely badly with all the pucks to the head, that a simple little ball (granted, it was the weighted ones with the water/anti-freeze in it) pushed it over the edge.
I emailed Steve Badger from NXi when I was searching for a new mask. He offered me a model that was a year or two older, but was basically the same minus a different clip system. He told me of all the different masks he had available, and he even offered to paint it in a different color if he didn't have one I liked it. Steve went out of his way to take care of a college student who didn't have a lot of money to spend on a quality mask. I believe my total came to about $220 shipped.
I will say this, also. My girlfriends little brother is currently in the Vaughn B7070 Intermediate mask, which is a smaller version of the 5500 mask. I examined it a bit, and I felt that it was a quality mask other than being a bit on the heavier side. I would also recommend this mask, and you can find it at about the same price point as an NXi if you search around a little bit.
