"Official" McKenney Thread

I searched, did not see one, so I thought I would create one!

I am currently wearing 32" McKenney 452 Instincts - nice pads. I find they are awfully stiff though - Ive tried to mould them into a more S shape, but as soon as I lay them in my bag - poom - almost straight up like a ruler again.

Is McKenney just a stiff pad like this?

I'm hoping to buy a pair of McKenney pants from Duke's in about a week. For the price, they came highly recommended. Lots of protection and a long life span, so to speak. I'll try to post some pics when I get them.

Nope, it's just that model I think. My buddy's old McKenney pads held one of the nicest "S" curves of any set I've ever seen. The only ones better were old school Brian's AirPacs.

Wasn't it Mckenney that used to make a C/A with a one piece elbow guard? I'm not sure how else to describe it. It was almost the same shape as the forearm protection, and held in place with elastic. Instead of folding like most elbow protection on a C/A it just slid up over the bicep armor when you moved your arm. Anyway, I saw this about 8 years ago at a Perani's and thought it was a cool idea. Was it a McKenney innovation, and if so, why did they discontinue it?

Nasty,

It sounds like you're talking about the Kay bicep, not the McKenney.

It could very well have been Kay too. All I know was that it was a brand I'd never heard of before, and that I was VERY impressed with it. I almost walked out with a new C/A, but ended up getting the catch glove of my dreams instead.

Sorry for the continual hijack...anyway

Is this it?.

I know the link says Armor, but their equipment is made using molds and designs by Tom Kay (confirmed by their about me section).

755 Pro Lite C/A

Best C/A I have worn. Doesn't restrict my movement at all. Not bulky and haven't felt a thing in my chest which is where I would get most of my bruises with other C/A's. Will definitely look at them for other gear purchases in the future.

Yep.

Sorry for the hijack. But, proof that C/A's can be made form fitting without sacrificing protection.

McKenney does make some great stuff. Not all of it is for everyone, but no company has gear that satisfies everyone.

Fluery, those are great looking pads. Are those the 755's or the ProSpec?

My 852' have a perfect s curve(they are also 32") and are very flexible. Try leaving them bent for a while.....I dont m\know though I never had a problem with flex. I'll get a picture of mine flexed if I can.

I'm a real believer in McKenney. They make high quality gear at relatively low prices, equalling unbeatable value.

I have or have used the following McKenney gear:

755 c/a medium: bought used from a board member. Great unit - light, mobile, solid protection, especially in the chest. I took a few pucks in the upper and lower arm areas that made me think I wanted a beffier unit so I bought...

852 c/a large: bought used (barely) from Sweedwing (Speedwing) on this board. He bought it new and heavily modded (see picture). This is a fantastically solid unit with tank-like protection. Honestly, it's probably too big on me (I brought it into McKenney to have an extra row of eyelets installed in the arms so they could be shortened). I have taken some pretty respectable slappers with this puppy and while I have felt some, they have never hurt. However, given its size, it's a touch bulky on me.

855 pants size 54: bought new last year. Excellent pants. Very protective and surprisingly mobile. When I bought these, I was afraid they might be too much. Nope. Great pant with no break in time.

755 catcher and blocker: bought these new last year and used them for a few months until I got my Battram gear. Nice gloves. Very natural feel for me and broke in quickly. I got a few stingers in the catcher which makes me think the Instinct would be a better glove for me.

My daughter has or has used:

655 catcher and blocker: older set I bought from eBay or this board (cannot recall). They were used and well broken in - now retired and sold to her hockey association but with a ton of life in them.

755 catcher and blocker: bought these new for her last year. She is thrilled with them.

Final Kay hijack post (hopefully):

That's the one guys. Thanks for the pics and video. You have no idea how much it had been bugging me wondering why McKenney had gone away from something so innovative. Nice to know that I just had my brands mixed up.
