I use the Box pad definition from AZ' great thesis from a couple of years back:

Box Pad - pads that employ a very stiff modular foam internal construction and, more importantly, rely upon a “pro fly” rotation around the leg as the goalie’s legs collapse into a butterfly save execution .

Damn good reading.

45 or 48 trapper and color combo?

As some of you may know, and I know a few of you are waiting for it. I have the VK5 demo trapper, I like it very much and am happy that Marc allowed me to keep it for a week so I can really get a feel as to what size I want to go with. I am playing Saturday night for a friend's "A" team. His team and the league I will play in is a step up from the "A" league that I play in, so i figure it will be a good gauge for me to decide on the size. I play now with a 48 and love it, the 45 I was sent is not that much smaller but here is the deal. At 27 I will not be playing pro hockey anytime soon or at all for that matter so why the 45? any thoughts on this from you guys that play or have ordered the 45 and your reasons why? The only other problem I have is coming up with a color combo. My trapper has always been an "opposite" color from the rest of my stuff, why? I have no idea, I just always did it that way. maybe that was to lore shooters into going glove side knowing that I could catch anything they put that way...maybe it is superstition....who knows? Here is the pic of my current set up, any ideas on what combo of red/blk/white. Thanks for the input guys and gals!

I can't wait until they start coming out with those VK6 hybrid pads.

They look sweet.

Unless I have a serious life changing event, like winning the lottery, I doubt I'll be fighting anyone for a brand new set of gear anytime soon.

I ordered 45. I play ACHA D2 Ice Hockey, its basically serious club college club hockey. We have a lot of good players from prep schools and AAA teams but none of us will ever make pros. I went with 45 because I used a beast which is ridiculously big and tried the Vortek 45. Its amazing. It comes down to this: Do you block or catch. If you catch it doesn't matter the size, the 45" will increase speed because its sick light. The 48 isn't bad, its just bigger -- I went with 45 because I am a catcher, I catch the puck and with increased speed I should catch even more.

Suggestion: Add a blocker to your order. That brian's is huge and Vortek makes amazing stuff.

As for color combos:

I went through this same thing in my mind...and in the end...I am not going to be playing in the NHL or any league that will reinforce the 45" ...so I went with old NHL specs...

Sirsaves - nice set...that will look good...I went with navy laces on mine...and I think that the colored laces will come out looking great!

Good points with the 45" ...I just wanted to go with 48" since I did get a chance to demo the 45"...

Savesalot, who do you play for and in what league, I played D2 ACHA in the MACHA for four years, had a lot of fun. I know the Brian's blocker is massive, I don't really like it but it is still new so I figured it wouldn't make sense to dump it right away. I'm not worried about catching, it is prolly my best asset on the ice, but three inches is three inches, ya know. Thanks for the info, and I like the colors too!

Towl,

Who did you play for, Temple? I am wondering because until this year they played with us in the DVCHC. Also, the 3" is mostly in the cuff not in the catching surface. AAAAnd we share the same bday. Crazy.

I went with colored laces because white laces end up all gray and black from pucks anyway. I have a 48" smith glove and I love the 45" Vortek so thats what I went with.

The VK6 is not better or worse, its a more Hybrid pad for someone who doesn't want such a flat face type pad.

are you worried at all that the back of your glove will get that "old" look since it is all white?...thoughts?
