What hollow do you like???

Hey Just wondering... The guy did my skates with a 1" hollow last time and I think they are too shallow... I feel like I dont have enough of an edge. What do you like? My skates are older CCMs with the nice thick goalie blade.

I'm an oldtimer and still use old Lange goalie skates with a 3/4 inch hollow.

My son is a better goalie than me (and all about modern techniques), and he keeps his skates at 5/8, and gets them sharpened about every 5 hours of use.

I personally go with a 3/8 cut but the ice i play on now is so hard that i would almost consider trying a 1/4 if it could be done.

3/4 is too shallow for me....I like 1/2 for my player skates and goalie skates. It's like having OBDs but without the fuss.

5'11", 170lbs

Brodeur style stance, not too wide, but play a lot of b'fly blocking.

Hollow vs weight

You should be asking for people weight as well. I weigh 180, and I use a 5/8 hollow on my goal skates, a 1/2 hollow on my players skates. I sharpen my daughters' and son's skates at 1/4 (They're 6 and younger)

But I use the Koho Thrust blades - I was at 1/2 on 'normal' blades

I have a combination of two cuts on the blade. The top part is 5/8 and the rest is 3/4

Hollow, schmollow. I have a special router bit that's 4mm wide and shaped like a >. It cuts a nice little v-shaped groove into the "edge" of the blade so I get two really sharp edges. That's the equivalent of about a 6mm hollow.

The other day I dropped off my skates at Duke's in Toronto for a Body Profile sharpening. After talking it over with the guy, I got a 28' radius and 2mm higher in the back. Today I picked them up and went to Canlan for pickup hockey. Oh, these skates are nice now. So nice that while playing, I didn't even notice them. I just moved and skated and did what I wanted, and the skates never got in the way.
