People may disagree, but I don't like to see daylight between the knees (BTW, if you've ever seen my playing, I don't get to coach myself

). In your second pic, I can still see some carpet. I would try driving the knees together as much as possible to seal that off. IMO, you want to get the puck with the stick before the pads, but if you're facing a straight-on shot, you want to seal the space from the hips down as best as you can because sometimes it gets over the stick.
By making sure your knees are as close to touching as possible, you eliminate the squeakers. So, as a personal preference thing, I'd say get those knees a little closer.
When you go into the bfly, do you feel like you're snapping your knees together and driving down or rolling/falling into it? If you're snapping your knees together, work on keeping them together as you're going down.
Another question: If I take away your thigh boards, do you feel like you have good closure between your legs?
