Here's every pic I could find of my "butterfly." My form is ****ing atrocious.

Gut trap, I think?

Puck's on top of my right pad. I got a piece of it with my stick and ramped it into myself...

Notice how I'm slouched, my stick is off the floor, and I'm too deep in the crease. Kids, don't play like this.

Loving the massive hole above my left shoulder.

Poke check ftw

Lookin' pretty square......

Again with being really on angle and square... I suck.

Woo five hole! I was reacting to the high glove shot
Also, I'm not fat; I'm big-boned.

It's college roller. Close enough to beer league, just with less beer.

I've been selling goalie equipment for the last 4 years so I can tell first hand how often goalies (especially kids) not even 5'5" want to buy 26" to 27" inches sticks when they should have 24" or 25" max. More often than not on the advice of some mystic coach that told 'hem their stick isn't always on the ice.
Thing is, the blade as to touch the ice only when the goalie is in a reactive stance ready to get a shot, not when the goalie is straight watching the play. And nowadays, 90% of the shot are stopped butterfly, which means the goalie is on his knees and that a longer paddle is only harder to control because the blade is further away from the body. So in a quick moveent you end up either with the blocker too high and not sealing the body or with the paddle not covering the five-hole.
Most 6' tall pros play with 25" inches, Roy played with 25", Toskala is playing with 24.5", over 6' they play with 26", longest I ever seen on a pro return is 26.5" on Giguere sticks and he is 6'3".
|
I know I've got a stick that's to tall for me. I'm going down to a 24" paddle with my next stick. I currently use a 25" paddle and as you can see in my picture on the first page, it raises my shoulder up to high when I put my stick black vertical.

couple of responses
moore00. Im not exactly sure what you mean. The play was a pass across so in the picture i was sliding and the player had lost control so I was goin to pull it in for the cover..
Tominator....not sure about the whole bionic "woman" stuff since im a guy and everything but I guess I can thank you for the compliment nonetheless.

Your new gear is too big for you! What are these 33"+1"? Even with your knees wide apart you can tell they're falling off the knee stacks and that's in your kitchen! I can only imagine how unstable they are in motion.... You should be in intermediate 32" dry (that is for vaughn, probably 31" in RBK's) for at least another year.
Same with the stick, what is it, an Aebischer 25" pro return? Even worst a 26" stock Huet?
Don't go over 24", look how far it is from your pads, how can you manoeuvre it on quick plays in the crease or on deflection. You probably have to pay extra attention to keep it covering the five-hole for the pic, there is no way it's gonna be there all the time on one-timer or breakaways.

I think they look pretty good. He has some growing room yes, but hes 12, he could spurt up at any time, and I would do the same in his situation. He spent around 2k on gear, better get at least a solid 3 years out of it.

If well chosen a growing kid will get 2 years out of is equipment. If you go planning on 3 years he will simply loose a year battling against his new gear and will little improve. Do I have to mention it is a tragedy if the kid is or looking for playing in a competitive level.
Had he choosen intermediate equipment he would have spent half the prize, would have gotten half back 2 years later by reselling it and depending on how he grew he could then choose between 33"+1" or 34"+1" and make the last of his minor hockey with it.

Brand new set of custom V3s... just so you know...
And by the way I don't critizise the butterfly itself, as someone mentioned before the knees are a little too wide apart, but the hands positioning is great.

Depends how he personally grows, he looks big for 12, maybe he already got his big spurt. Bottom line is sweet pads, I think they fit fine, and I hope they serve you well.
