vaughn velocity vs itech xwing

hockey dad checking in.
down to 2 choices
new vaughn 7100 youth pads
or 4.8 xwing.

do vaughn pad have adjustable knee locks like the itechs?

what is so different about the vaughn pads that u have to do the straps up so much looser than other pads? no toe ties either?

if u had a choice, what would u prefer?

vaughn does not have the adjustable knee lock. I have had a set of v1's, and v2's, and wouldn't trade them for anything. I honestly think it doesn't matter what you get since it is for a younger goalie. The only thing I could see benefiting the goalie is the adjustable knee lock. He might not know the difference in feel or the difference of functionality of the pads. -Chris#33

vaughn all the way, so far this year ive worn the rx9, didnt like them to think on top. Then sold those and went with V3s and didnt like how wide the leg channel was and the exta flap then sold those to the other goalie on my team and know i am wereing the V2s with my own custom design. So i say go with vaughns. And vaughn is durable it will last alot longer then the itechs

is there a price difference? my first pair were vaughn legacy's then velo's, itech ever since, i would go with itech, they a VERY flexible and they are well made for a low price. what did your kid say? younger goalies usually pads will last 1-2 if your lucky maybe 3 seasons so go with what HE likes the feel of them when wearing them. don't worry much about features of the pad(although the AKL on the itechs might help him get longer wear on them) just let him feel comfortable.

great point. im gonna go with what makes him comfortable. but i know he'll prefer the vaughns. all u goalie types are little different, so if he feels uncomfortable it would be quite self defeating.......i really like the idea of the adjustable knee locks. he needs pad with a little extra thigh rise..... the ankle to calf measurement is quite short......he has 20" koho 480's.....yes 20". his knee is still in the knee cradle but the thigh rise is far too short. his season is almost over but has camps early summer. so im thinking itech 24" with adjustable knee locks or 23+1 vaughns.

I'd say go with the Vaughns, personally. But comfort is generally a good thing to go by.

Be careful about getting too big of a pad, though. If he is good in a 20", it might be a bit of a jump for a 24". I obviously don't know the skill of your son, but at his age I'd be more concerned with him establishing a strong skating base, and pads with huge thigh rises can really get in the way of that. His knee might not even hit the cradle in a 24", compounding problems.

i may have few options here but i am very careful of what i shall put on him. i only used the 20's for one season but i am okay with that because last spring, they were the perfect size.....

the 22" pads i have looked at have no higher of a thigh rise than the 20's.....
im hoping the 23+1 vaughn has him in the bottom 1/2 of the cradle. or that i can adjust the itech appropriately.....

to be honest there are much better skilled goalies at his age. but none that are as strong of skaters - with or without goalie gear. that is one thing he works very hard at and i am a little jealous because he is definitely gifted in this area.........if he works as hard at the goalie camps, im sure his skills will develop......
