They are a JR team in the Ontario Hockey League (not affiliated).

A long long time ago (40 years +) the Kitchener Rangers were the feeder team to the NY Rangers and were owned by them. This is no longer the case and they are a Junior team in the Ontario Hockey League. This year they are the host for the Memorial Cup, which is the hardest trophy to win in hockey... in my opinion.

I would venture to guess he says that becuase first you have to win the championship for your league, then you get sent to this UBER tournament where you play against the winners of all the other league championships around the country to try and win the memorial cup. Sounds pretty frick'en tough to me...

It is well known and acknowledged by hockey purists that the single most difficult trophy to win in the sport is the Memorial Cup. Like someone mentioned, you have to go through a long season, a tough playoffs, win your league championship then....go toe to toe with the other league champions to hoist it.
But it isn't just that. Many of the elite junior players that have the most to do with helping their clubs do well....don't tend to hang around for all their years of junior eligability so they often only get maybe one or two shots at it...whereas you may have a career to get a Stanley Cup.
Canadian junior teams used to be affiliated with NHL clubs a few decades ago. You had the Toronto Marlies (not the AHL version), Oshawa Generals were affiliated with Boston (Orr, Cashman, Middleton, O'Reilly all came though Oshawa), the Jr. Canadians...yada, yada.
It hasn't been that way in some time but Kitchener is a long time franchise in the Ontario Junior League and isn't about to lose the name.

Okay, I'll better explain my point. First, you have to make the play offs and then win your league just to make the memorial cup. Once you have done that, then you have to beat the winners of the 2 other best junior leagues in North America plus the host team in a one week round robin tournament.
It would be similar to the UEFA cup in Soccer, which now that I think about it would be one of the hardest trophies to win in all of sports.
The thing with the Memorial Cup is that there is also the possibility of you losing players during the season to the World Junior tournament and the NHL or the other Pro Leagues. When you make the Memorial Cup it's against the best teams that you've never played against all year. It's not easy to win.

And you say that why? Memorial cup is much harder and you get fewer opportunities.

I wonder how they work out the trademark issues with the team...that's pretty much a (older style) Rangers jersey with an OHL logo sewn on it.

A few years ago when the memorial cup was hoasted here in London the knights had the best team in the chl by far. Set many records were undefeated for 32 games of something like that to start the season. Crushed the other ohl teams then had to face sidney crosby and the rimouski oceanic to win the memorial cup. They beat them but rimouski also had an amazing team. The simple fact that your playing the best teams in junior hockey who more then likely have players who are gonna go on to pro careers the next season is just amazing.

He was there as an emergency call-up, I doubt he would have had new gear done.
