Is it just my monitor or does his stuff really look more purple than blue? It's been the same in just about every shot of his new stuff.

The lightning bolt down the front looks good, but his team's colors are blue, black, and silver. There is no black or silver on his mask, and the only blue is very light powder blue. I just don't think it looks right, although in my opinion, the design itself is very nice-looking.

my dad got a chance to see smith's mask two weeks ago in a body shop he goes to, they were putting on a clearcoat for it. It is painted by David Arrigo for those who don't know!

The more I see it the more I don't like it. It doesn't fit at all, especially with his new gear.

Looks blue to me. I think people are just a little too used to seeing a similar color combo on Labarbera.

I still can't believe he (smith) broke his new stuff in that quick most goalies hang w/ their gear for weeks til they switch to new team colors... must really be pissed at dallas trading him and wants to start over quickly and erase bad memories

ps: looks blue

I don't think that's always the case. I spoke with a college goalie who attended penguins pre-camp (as an extra goalie), and had some great conversations with fleury and sabourrin (sp?) about gear. Fleury said that he was so used to playing with new gear that that was what was comfortable for him, not broken-in gear. I'm not saying that's the norm, but it could be what's happening here

Oh, and he said that Esche was at the pre-camp for a couple of days for some reason, he never found out why. Anybody know?

Most goalies these days can play with their new gear after just a practice or two. Gear breaks in much faster than it used to and I've noticed the younger goalies appear to be using new stuff faster than the older guys. Plus a lot of the newer goalies appear to like stiffer gear anyways (ie: DiPietro, Lundy, etc.)

A vaughn rep told me last year at Elkin's goalie camp that Cam ward sometimes wears his pads in games without even practicing in them

When he gets new pads in the game, he tries REALLY hard to keep the puck marks off of them too (a'la Sieve-D).

Pisses us off in the stands, and we're getting tired of replacing the bulbs in the goal lights

It helps when you catch every shot in your stomach.
