If you guys recall, last year, Dom was doing upper-body work with his goalie coach, Sparta Prague's Josef Bruk, and he had everything on--save his leg pads and skates--while taking lots of shots from puck machines...
That led to the infamous "Hasek turban" photo:
So Dom probably did the same thing with that new blocker and whatever trapper he was using (CTK did a little story on Dom's training regimen
in August).
Dom's very picky with his gloves. I wouldn't be surprised if he not only has a glove that didn't pass NHL inspection, but also has another two or three that passed that he's not using--he actually pulled glove he used during the 02 Cup Finals out of a bank vault when he wasn't comfortable with the gloves that were made for him in the 03-04 season.
The way Dave Wilcox explained it to me is that TPS has to beat up the break a bit to get the plastic pieces to start overlapping one another so that "taco" closure is just right for him. Only one person knows how to lace up his glove to his specifications, and Dom's been known to ask to have it re-laced at all hours.
Dom usually uses one or two pairs of leg pads, he uses one chest protector and maybe two sets of pants, and, once he gets a glove he likes, one or maybe two gloves a season. He's also picky about his helmet--he can't stand it when the chin cup actually touches his chin, so his j-clips push his cage outward.
He's more adventurous with his blockers, and he goes through at least four a year--he's got one that is completely flat, one with a bit of a curve on it, and he used one in the playoffs that had a slightly lower hand position than his usual blockers against the Sharks and Ducks. He'll have a shiny new blocker for the start of the season.
