Finally a great book on the history of the goalie mask

Wiley::Saving Face: The Art and History of the Goalie Mask

Picked my copy up today at Barnes and Noble here in MPLS. This book is a must have for anyone who cares about goalie masks. From the Clint Benedict to 2008 they are all in here with stories behind the people who made and make the masks.
They got access to the masks that are behind glass at the HOF and the pictures are incredible.

I cannot express how fantastic this book is.

That book goes right up on the wishlist for christmas :P What makers and painters are in there? Jerry Wright, Michel Lefevre, Greg Harrisson, Ed Cubberly? What about Frank Cipra for a painter?

Everybody is in there. You name it. Painters, makers, goalies. It is amazing.
Gary Smith who used to be a member and may still be spearheaded the book. The printing is amazing and there are so many incredible pictures in there it is not to be believed. The detail and history is top notch.
I paid $15 more than that Amazon price and don't regret it at all. In Canada I think Chapters is carrying them as a friend of mine picked one up in Toronto there.

I sent Gary some of my personal pictures of Ernie Higgins last spring to use if he could - now I have to see if I'm in there!

thanks

thanks for the feedback; yes it has all the major mask makers and painters featured (the ones that would talk to us anyway). I couldn't include absolutely everyone as we were limited by time and space.(which is strange considering i've been working on this project for 8 years). Both Jim Hynes (co-author) and i are pleased with how this book turned out and we will be embarking on a tour later this month. If anyone would like a book signed you can contact me at gandl@nb.sympatico.ca and we can make arrangements. I don't personally sell books but peple send their copy to me (with return postage) and i'll personalize it and sign it.
Cheers
Gary Smith

I looked at it yesterday. It's nice, but i've seen others with more mask coverage. It also seems to repeat other editions i've seen.

Despite, i loved the old school pics of the custom mask making. And i had no clue so many goalies used the pretzel model. I thought Dryden was the only one.

I'll get it when ever it goes on sale.

Too each their own but....

If you are talking about Garys book I think you are almost as mistaken as your perception of Dryden as the lone Pretzel wearer.

True if you are looking for an exclusive focus on modern masks then yes you will be disappointed.
If you are looking for an overall history of the goalie mask with in depth coverage of all eras and direct information from those involved I challenge you to provide me with a book that is better.
If it is out there I want to own it.
