To Turco Break or Not to Turco Break?
I've been studying the forums and don't see an answer to the above question. I understand the point of having the break; but don't know how to qualify it. How wide or how narrow should your butterfly be for the TB to work for/against you? Does your height factor into the decision? Am I giving the TB too much credit for its affect on my butterfly? I see a number of choices for pads with this option and want to understand it before making a decision.
FYI - I am 6'2" with a what would be fair to say is a wide butterfly.

due to the fact that your local, I know the only place you can find some of these in store is peranis... you should go over and try some on... my son and I both have rbks with the break, mine are the p2 pros his are the 8k seniors. We both used the regular ones before, I had a ACL repair and afterwards didnt regain the normal width I had before ... so I opted for the addl thigh rise and turco break, my son got them because they dont affect his butterfly narrow or wide,,, he just wanted the colors....
you should try them on before giving them the hands down...
let me know if you would like to meet some time and see mine in person.

dON'T get a break b/c you have a wide butterfly and you are tall (hopefully in the legs).
With the double break it reduces your blocking surface, but allows more mobility.
If you like big thigh rises then no on the turco.
Get whatever you want, at the end of the day your wearing it not us.

Actually not really on the bolded statement, my sons butterfly hasnt narrowed his blocking surface at all. His butterfly is as wide as it was.... It just bends a little more naturally.

Do you say that because the thigh rise is actually smaller on the turcos, or because it just doesn't come up as high because of the break?

yes.
you have more mobility but you cover less b/c it is bent back and not up and down.

This break was around before Turco started abusing it, so why the name, lame.

Because Turco was the first Pro/NHL goaltender to have it built into the standard RBK pad?
This is an RBK specific question, I've never heard Turco break used on other manufactures pads...
Or did you know that and were just pushing buttons? lol

He wasn't first, just the biggest name.
RBK historically would not change their design (continuous roll). Once they did, they referred to the mod by it's most popular user.
By the same token, Giguere wasn't the first to use the "Jiggy break"
Turco doesn't use other brands, so other brands would not refer to the breaks that way, esp. those who had similar breaks for years before RBK did.

I think some of this stuff is overthought. Two of my sons use the 'Turco' pads. Both of them like them simply because they have a more broken-in feel...a bit more flexy top when pushing down on them and when the thigh rises mesh together. Haven't noticed any difference in actual coverage or butterfly effect. Both the kids are young and very flexible, unlike some of us more ancient types so they don't really have any issue splaying out the legs.
If you like the basic idea of the RBK pad but felt it was a bit stiff and clunky at the top, the extra breaks will help. If you like your thigh rise stiffer, stick with the originals.
I know that sounds incredibly...well....elementary. But truly I tell you, I think that is all there is to it.
