Well, as requested in the show of your mask thread, here is a quick step-by-step guide how i painted my 2008 T3 sportmask using sandpaper, tape and spraypaintcans
I painted this mask first time during the summer but the design didn´t turn out just like i wanted so I sanded it down and made a new design.
Before u start to sand, paint etc, you have to decide what design u want to have. A good way is to take a photo of your mask and use photoshop in the computer to make drawings of what u want.
When u have found your design of choice, try to make drawings on paper so u know how big the design will be on the mask itself.
Then u can use either clear plastic with sticky backing or use tape as I did most of the time.
Then It is important (imo) to start with the lightest color, cover everything that´s gonna be that color, then paint next color, cover it, next color, cover and so on. Finish with the darkest ofcourse. Then when u remove the maskin-tape it´s a good idea to use a model-knife and be very gentle and careful so you don´t remove any paint.
Step 1; Use 400 grit sandpaper and make the surface "ruff" so the new paint have something to get a grip on
Step 2: Use chemical clean gasoline on a piece of cloth and clean the dust and then clean 1 more time so it´s no grease etc left on the mask. (no pic)
Step 3: Ad first layer of paint, thin layer,, let it dry 5 minutes, new layer, dry- new layer - until u have no old paint shining through. Here I learned a lesson. I should have used a grey color as base layer that would even out the color differences and then ad the white. As it was now I had to spray extremely much white paint to cover everything up
Step 4: Here I have covered the white parts and spraypainted the metallic - silver and covered up that parts that are going to stay metallic silver. I have used both tape and clear plastics.
Step 5: Now I have painted the red paint and covered up what´s gonna stay red. U also see the cutting board and the tape i´m using.
Step 6: Here I have covered the mask with the final color, a nice metallic dark blue
Step 7: Now I have started to unmask the tape and the finished product is more and more visable;
Step 8: Last step was when to put on the clearcoat. I have previously always used an autopaintshop that place the clearcoats but this time i wanted to try a 2 component clearcoat on a spraycan. U activate the hardener by pressing a botton on the can. It has to be used within 24 hours after activation.
Step 9: And here is the finished product:
