These are a very basic pad. Dead straight, stiff as a board, but reasonably light. As cheap and simple as it comes. They are cheap for a reason, there's nothing to them.

That having been said, it wouldn't be too hard to modify them strap and knee flap wise to turn them into a very usable pad.

However, if it was MY $400 Canadian, I'd much rather buy a used pair of higher end pads.

My son is getting the 4.8 pads, probably next week, and once he has them for a bit I will post a review based on their capabilites as a kid's pad. He's 7 1/2 and plays Mites.

I have the Heaton Helite IV 6100. Definitely a pro level pad. The only thing I am doing to mine is to install a knee lock on them. I wear them loose and although they still return to square ok, I want that little extra. I just saw a pair of CCM/Heaton Helite 6 and in my opinion not much has changed in design but the quality is down.

If you can get the Helite IV for a good price you wont be disappointed; it is a great pro level pad and is build very well. They are well balanced and are great if you are an active, skating goalie.
One thing to keep in mind is that the Heaton pads tend to run small and have short tops; I like my pads that way but others may not. If you like pads with tall tops, these are not what you want.
