Smith Gear Review

We'll make this Smith Gear review short and sweet because there are so many out there. (gear used for about ten games).

All gear is stock - pads are 11 inch wide.

First off, The Blocker - to be honest, a blocker is a blocker to me. I haven't felt a shot. The blocker feels well balanced. I do believe it's made the same as a Vaugn Velocity Blocker.

Secondly, the Catcher - nice and broken in after ten games. Great palm protection and no stingers. Large catching surface. Again, I do believe is similar to the Vaugn Velocity Catcher.

And last, the Pads - 11 inch wide. According to my scale, 4.6 ponds. Reason for going 11 inch: I was hoping it would make me quicker and more mobile - and it has done just that. Absolutely NO REGRETS. I do not feel like I have let a goal in due to the reduction in size. The reduction in size is definetly worth the increase in mobility and quickness, without a doubt.

Lots of comments from the local goalies asking me why I'm playing with kids gear....lol...I guess the 11 inch is visibly quite a bit smaller. But they LOVE the colour.

Feel free to ask me any questions. I like to clean my gear regularly and that's why my gear looks so good after ten games...lol.....

Silver seems to be a big hit. Looks fantastic on the ice.

Thanks,

Roger.

Do you know if Pete makes the outside roll smaller to compensate for the decreased width (to keep a similar look to the 12" pads)?

Great set.

Outside roll definitely looks narrower than the one on my 12" 3000s.

The blocker is indeed much like the Velo, but the catcher isn't like the Velo at all.

They look quite nice. Couple questions, what's the height, do they have thighboards, and was there an upcharge?

I can't wait for my 1000s. I feel like an Rbk whore waiting for MAF pads. 10 weeks to go.

Does Pete make the pads all by himself or does he have workeres? Does anyone have pictures of his factory?

it's just him and one other guy...I think his "factory" is more like a workshop.

Nice looking set Roger. Quick question, what kind of rebounds are you getting? Are they stopping close to the pad or popping out a bit?

I spoke with Pete just last week. He has a bunch of part-time staffers that help him out. He didn't mention any full-time employees.

I haven't been to Pete's "new" shop, since he moved late last year, but I saw the shop previous to that. I think Pete pretty much makes your pads, he may have help from others, but for the most part, I think it's him making your gear. He had some sweet machines for cutting, etc. And every time I've called his shop, he answers the phone.

Personal service like that is not easy to come by these days... it's worth every penny and every minute you need to wait for that gear!

its hard to say really all shots come at different speeds some times the puck stops close and at times they pop out. but in general i would have to say that the puck does pop out after a save the way i like it too.
