Vaughn Velocity 3 C/A w/ PICS

recently purchased the new '08 Vaughn V3 chest protector.
When I first picked it up I had to double check it was still together because it was so light. Much lighter than my ******* 993 and it is a size bigger!! Vaughns design team did a fantastic job with color scheming, material selection and overall adjustments.

The Back/Shoulders: The back is actually completley seperate from the chest pad and is held on by velcro. It is extremely adjustable. They went with two bottom straps near the bottom of the back to hold it tight. Very adjustable and elastic helps keep it tight. The shoulder areas have one of the best strapping systems i have ever seen. I believe there is eight, yes eight, indiviual straps you can adjust. Two on each side adjust how tight it is held to the clavical and shoulder area and the back plate is adjustable up down left and right. I am very, very pleased with this system.

The white is tape to hold it together, the velcro ran out of room

Showing the 2 piece back

Arms: I was extremely skeptical when I first saw them. There is only four straps on the entire arm, and no velcro or elastic, something I was not used to. But it is a case of short and sweet. After about five minutes of tinkering I got them perfect nice and tight very minimal movement when i moved my arms. The elbow protectors are flat bottomed, not like the conventional round bottom.

Chest: There is a few adjustable pieces, one on each side near the ribs and one on each side near the shoulders. I have yet to move them around because I really like the way they are set up. The padding is phenominal, the bottom of the chest pad is what made me happy. instead of being thin flimbsy foam it is thick and fits perfectly in my pants for extra pelvic protection. The neck protector on it is perfectly placed doesnt gag me like my old one and is actually quite beefy unlike others I have tried.

Orange pieces are adjustable

Looks:10/10
Couple guys on my team said you should play with out a jersey just tape your number on the back.

Protection: 10/10
Unreal, Dont feel any shots to the stomach and tonight I took two slappers from the slot one when right off my shoulder and i didnt feel any pain and one hit me right in the center of my chest right below my neck protector, very scary shot, didnt feel any pain.

Flexibility: 10/10
Wow, felt like I used it for months and I had it on for ten minutes before my game. I never would do this with motion protection pads (leg pads, glove, blocker, skates, pants, C/A) but I did, I used it without a practice or skate. Boy, I was happy as a pig in poo, except I was a goalie in a C/A. LOL

I really have never felt so good about an equipment buy, one of the best things I have ever bought. If there is any more questions let me know!

3 Month Review

Durability: Nothing to report or complain about. Its white so there is some staining from locker room floors and the chin cup on my helmet. No signifcant fraying, small amounts on wrists and back.

Protection: Now that its completley broken in it fits and feels amazing. I have felt maybe 2-3 shots on the arms and 1 of the shoulder.

The only thing I may adjust is the arms, there a little loose and a little long, might have them chopped alittle bit.

Works moves awesome with the velocity 3 pants. Not tucked in.

As to Date probably the best equipment buy.

Nice C/A, good review!

3 questions:
- Did U consider the Epic and if so did U try it in comparison?
- Do you wear your C/A tucked into your pants and what pants do you wear
- With the back plate velcro'd to the shoulder I'm wondering if it could come seperated in a collision, what do U think?

Thanks

I have tried on the epic 8800 as it came in with the shipment. I dont think it differs at all from the 8000 besides the number. I like the look of the V3 better and it is tough to say which is better cause I have never used an epic completley geared up in a game/practice. Plus I already paid for the V3 and someone else paid for the 8800 so did not have a choice.

I use Sherwood 7000 Pants and I tie the chest pad down through a chest loop and the loop on the from of my pants. It holds there pretty well but I am planning on new pants in the next couple weeks. Possibly the V3 pants or Epics, most likely V3 because I have the pads, glove, blocker and C/A. Kinda wanna complete this set, pants, stick and helmet I believe would be it.

I would not be worried at all it is velcro'd in on both sides. If you look at the second back picture you can see that it is velcro'd bottom and top. I had a hard time getting it off in the first place and I highly doubt it would come off in a scrum/pile up in front.

Anything but bulky.

I will not lie when I first put it on I am like oh crap, wasted money here but I was WAY wrong. Its bulky in the sense it takes up alot of net and there is alot to it, but it is so light, And there is no restriction in the arms, up and down, front and back. It is flexible and easy to move in, I used it the first day I got it in a game and I do not regret it because it felt more flexible than my 993 I used for 10 months and I took some heavy shots in the chest and shoulders and did not feel pain I could feel the puck but there was no stinging or red marks after the game and I began feeling shots in my 993 about 15-20 mins after using it.

I thought about going custom colors, which you probably can, but it is a waste of time and money. No one sees it besides you and your team in the locker room and there will be an upcharge plus a longer wait time for the custom colors. I would not bother, I have the V3 set and thought about matching it but I was convienced not to.

Hey first off nice piece of equiptment you've got there, and nice review. I was just wondering though, those little orange flaps by the arms, do they make any difference at all or just kinda useless?

3 or 4 "ice times" now. I will try to keep updating as much as I can.

Which orange ones are you talking about? The ones by the shoulder or the ones by the ribs?

No problem, those insignificant little orange pieces are quite effective, they are made of a very high density foam with most likely a piece of plastic covering it. On your C/A where the back/stomach wraps around there is a gap between your arm pit and the start of the wrapped around back/stomach piece. The piece tends to "close up" that hole and does not allow any to be visiually visible from the front. Also when your in a butterfly you sometimes the the "squeakers" that you get almost everything of but trickle into the back of the net. This piece seems that it stops or "seals" that hole and does not allow pucks through.
