So is this thing bulky? How does the backpiece connect to the front? Is there velcro or quick-release strap or is it one connected unit?

Not bulky at all....There's a one velcro piece that attaches on the left side of the abdomen...It's alright.

It's a solid protector and you can't go wrong with the price at all.

Just some initial thoughts after receiving it the mail this afternoon. I have not worn it out on the ice yet, I'm actually kinda scared to. Once openning the box and taking it out, I immediately noticed two things. LIGHT - this thing is very light and nimble. Immediately I thought, oh no, this thing wont be very protective... I put it on and was very impressed however with the mobility out of the box. It moved like liquid while I had it on.
I ordered a small since i'm only 5'5 and one thing i noticed is that the portion that protects your stomach area is shorter than most other CA's. It also does not wrap around your (at least my) stomach completely exposing the bottom sides of my stomach (I'm not the skinniest guy but nor am I the fattest either). The side flaps just barely cover over my rib section, so the exposed section of my torso spans from just under the rib to my waist on either side. At first I thought I may have ordered a size too small but then i checked the arms and they were perfect length. The shoulder and elbow floaters have intelligently designed folds that bend naturally with your body. The plastics for these parts are also relatively thin. One shoulder floater completely covers the upper arm bicep area so to nullify any fears of stingers in the bicep region (that was nice). Arm protection looks solid, collarbone is scary thin as others have stated, dont wear this thing unless you have some sort of combo.
I am hoping that after I tuck these things into my RBK pants that my pants will make up the protection around the sides of the belly, but I don't think they ride up that high. I may have to find some way to sew in some additional belly protection to make up for it.
Anyway I will try this thing out tomorrow night and give my first impressions after.

Enjoyed everyone's comments
I too just picked this C/A up from Goalie Monkey. Was a bit hesitant to order since I don't like a bulky pad. But can't beat the price. I get most of my stuff at cost, and still tough to find a pro-level C/A for under $300.
In addition to bulk, my other concern is size. I am 6'0" 175 lbs. My Epic is a L and a bit too short for me-- leaves my lower stomach exposed too often. From what I know, Louisvile runs a bit larger so a L should be ok. But how adjustable is it? You guys all talking about the clavicle protection- looks solid in the pics I have seen. Am I missing anything?
Should have mine in about a week- will let you know what I think.

That $199 price was just too tempting, so I took the plunge and bought one yesterday. Got home today and it was sitting on my front porch. And I was thinking of driving the 1 hour each way to pick it up so I would have it by tomorrow night.
My first impressions mirror much of what has already been posted. Feels very light compared to my TPS XHale. The gut leaves too much room as I like it tight around my stomach. I will have the wife sew in some velcro so I can pull it tighter. I wasn't really concerned about the clavical exposure because I do use a dangler, but the bottom corners are exposed. We will see if this becomes an issue. I know of three guys in my ice league that go head hunting and hit me in this area often. Hopefully, I won't have any problems.
This thing feels great once I tightened all of the arm and shoulder straps. Arm movement is better than I expected right out of the box. It definitely covers more area than my XHale which is a nice bonus.
I will post about my game experience after I use it tomorrow on ice and then Sunday in my roller game.

My wife died of pancreatic cancer in 1999, and I honor her by contributing to PanCAN for every game I win.
My kids put pink tape on it to honor Mom, and I went on a hot streak.... Yep, I'm superstitious!
Here's the backplate of my mask, honoring Becky and my late sister, who was one of the first kidney transplant patients in America.

See what you mean...
I can see that the sides of the stomach are a bit exposed. That could be an issue depending on how the pad integrates with my pants. Looks like it offers nice rib protection, since the pad wraps around the body. May take the (adjustable/toggle) straps from my old C/A and have it sewn in. That will definitely cinch the pad a bit tighter to the stomach.
Thanks for the pics!

God bless you man-- sorry to read about your losses! Love the backplate! I too play with a pink ribbon tied to my C/A-- have since my MOL was diagnosed with breast cancer.
