As I began coaching a high school varsity team last year, I was in search of materials that would help my coaching and also my playing (I’m only 23, still competitive). Picked up a copy of Bob Janosz’s new DVD Janosz School of Goaltending. He is the goalie coach for the Rochester Americans (AHL), and asst goalie coach for the Buffalo Sabres. According to his bio online he also has a masters in physical education.
I found the dvd to be very helpful. It is very thorough, yet does not pass the basics (everyone can use reinforcement). There are boatloads of chapters;
Stance, Shuffle, T-Push, Angles, Butterfly, Recovery, Butterfly, Sticksaves, Powerpush, Paddle Down, Glove and Blocker, Rebound Control, Breakaways, Behind the Net, Low Walkouts, High Walkouts, Centering passes, Screens and Deflections, Scramble, Playing the Puck, and Pokechecks.
Many of the chapters have subchapters. For example, under butterfly: full butterfly, butterfly block, forward butterfly block, backward butterfly block, half butterfly, shuffling half butterfly, forward half butterfly, backward half butterfly, butterfly slide, butterfly slide common errors, ¼ turn butterfly slide, backward ¼ turn butterfly slide, and transition butterfly slide
Under not only each chapter but also each subchapter: the save selection is addressed; possible uses are given, followed by a list of key points for that save selection. This is followed by a visual explanation, which also illustrates drills that can be used to work on these save selections. The options are not limited however; there is often a multitude of potential ways to work on a particular aspect. During this entire time, there is a voiceover clearly explaining other points of interest regarding that save selection, common errors, things to watch out for, potential problems/shortcomings, and additional helpful advice. Explains weight placement and transfer, keys to proper balance in various situations, puck tracking, rebound control of specific drills and save selections, etc.
For those who are coaching different age groups, or have a youngster they share the video with- the video also address, in many times drill by drill, different methods, drills and executions for the various age and ability levels. Different ways of executing a save selection based on not only age but agility (ie: “this backwards motion is more comfortable to execute in a half butterfly for those tighter through the hips and will yield them better rebound control”). Rebound control for the save selection is touched upon explained where applicable.
Visual illustrations are given without a puck, with a puck, then drills (with or without puck)
The video reiterates previous points in later drills to ensure problems don’t arise, and to reinforce proper technique where skills and movements intertwine (where they very often do).
There is a lot of material covered on the DVD, and I’m under the impression that this will be followed by more (which I’m curious to see as there is so much covered in this video).
