Vancouver Fans Booing Luongo

Just an FYI for those who aren't in the know.

Vancouver fans are cheering Lou, for Luongo and are not saying boo. Or Boo-urns.

This cheer stems from the hometown boy makes good kicker/punter for the Candian Football League's BC Lion Lui Passaglia.

Lui Passaglia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

He was an institution for the Lions and played for them for 25 years. Every time he came out on the field the fans would cheer Lou.

Being a BC/Vancouver thing, this cheer has carried over to Luongo and actually, would probably carry over to anyone who had any part of their name sounding like 'Lou'. Provided they were any good.

But I can understand why people think that it is boo-ing as they sound similar. In fact, at my mother's recent college graduation where Lui Passaglia was getting an honourary degree in field goaling or something, he gave a speech and the crowd cheered "Lou". My mom turns to me and says, I don't think it's very polite to people to boo this man, even if his speech isn't very good.

I had to explain the whole thing to her.

So anyways, I've seen several comments popping up regarding the supposed 'boos' towards Luongo.

And I just wanted to clear this up.

Looks like the Ducks are all going 5 hole on him
After watching him for 80 plus games
That is the weak spot

Maybe, but only one of the 3 goals last night was 5 hole.

I dont think thats entirely correct. While its got obvious ties to the city I can recall hearing it a long long time back in the early 80's during Detroit Tiger games when Lou Whitaker came to the plate or made a nice play.

Its been used in plenty of chants over the years.

maybe. but in Vancouver, BC it stemmed from Lui Passaglia, not Lou Whittaker.

and since Passaglia started playing in 1976, I say that the detroit tigers' fans ripped off BC Lions' fans

Hate to burst your bubble 'bone but in the 70's we didn't see much CFL on tv here in Detroit (even though Channel 9 shows it every Saturday no one in Detroit gives a $hit about canadian football; hell, we got the Lions and no one in Detroit gives a $hit about them either)

I was at the game saturday, and wow it sounds like boo haha. But it's lou, just the vowels sound the same I guess. I was like "why boo??" , but then realized everyone around me was saying "lou".
