the thread title made me laugh. Craigslist is one of the more unreliable ones, at least with ebay you get some protection.

I've run across this scam several times at work. Basically you get sent a forged check and if you cash it and send them the money back, good for them. If not, they have only lost the cost of a stamp.

Because it's amazingly cheap to harvest email addresses and send out these scams. It's difficult to trace (especially since cops rarely care). And if even one out of a thousand falls for it, hey -- that's $3600 + merchandise in his pocket!

Craigslist is way more secure than eBay. Craigslist is supposed to be a local avenue for you to sell your stuff. You meet with people in person and transact funds when goods are handed over once inspected. There's no waiting to see if the guy shipped it and is it as described. You don't have to worry about Paypal Charge backs. If your using craigslist like eBay trying to find stuff all over the country then your missing the point.

I just picked up a sweet 2 month old iPod 8G Nano (guy gave me the receipt for it) for $100.00 on craigslist. I met with the guy at a starbucks, Made sure it worked, and once satisfied I paid him. That's what craigslist is for.

I'll admit it I'm using it as ebay, I'm posting it everywhere I know hockeys big... however at my price hopefully nobody will mind the shipping costs and I wouldn't screw over anyone with hockey gear

wpgmax, this is the part I was referring to. When it doesn't involve physically interacting with the seller.

craigslist

as screwy as this sounds I can see it being difficult to trust someone and buy on craigslist, unless in your area or inperson. I'd only sell on craigslist I'd never buy unless it were in my area.... So, I'm sure I won't be selling these pads anytime fast there, however it was free and I closed my ebay (due to identity hack)

If your not physically interacting with the person then I wouldn't even consider it. As mentioned there is no buyer protection through craigslist which is why it's not intended to be used as a North America wide selling tool.

the stuff I have sold on Craigslist has been face to face. I still think that is the best way to deal with those types of sales. So far it has been a great place to sell and all the people that have inquired have been local.

I've bought & sold stuff on Craigslist (as well as meeting women!) and always deal locally. Every time I list something there, I get the idiots trying this scam telling me to e-mail them my address, etc.

I e-mail them back & tell them that when their money order has cleared my account, I'll ship the item. That always makes them go buh-bye!!
