Turco and Smith mock Luongo in morning skate

They just showed on Sportsnet that Turco and Smith were wearing cardboard flaps (with the number "1" on them) on the outside on the outside area of the pads which were supposed to represent Luongo's knee lock and how much the outside sticks out. They wore them through parts/all of the morning skate.

That seems like pretty low class by those two. I'll try to get some video or pics.

Hans

globesports.com: Stars question Luongo's equipment

Turco and Smith just end up looking like two dorky teenagers in all of this.

Turco / Smith goof on Roberto Luongo at morning skate

was listening to sports radio about Mike Smith and Marty Turco wearing some exaggerated cardboard cut-out "flaps" on their pads during warm-up to goof on something Roberto Luongo has on his pads. Apparently Marty is all up in arms about them or something...maybe he's a bit sour over losing that 7 game series last year???

The thing was on the radio they didn't say exactly what it was. I hate it when non-goalies talk about goalie equipment because everything is a flap or a cheater so I couldn't figure out what they meant.

I know Luongo wears a customized pant with an elongated thigh guard sewn into his pants, you can see it easily when he butterflies, but those would have to be clear by Kay Whitmore for him to wear and by the looks of them, I think they should meet the requirements of following the contour of the body and not extending beyond the leg. Just wondering if anyone has a shot of Turcs and Smith from the morning skate, I saw the gear sitings page but non had been posted and if anyone has heard mopre of these alleged "flaps" I'm sure Kris King is boarding a plane as we speak to head out to Van-City to inspect them.

i find this ironic just cause i have a pair of turco pro returns...and from pictures they are the exact same pants he still wears...and they have this rediculous flap in the knee area...i think if i wore rbks id be better off with the luongo pants...

I'm sure they were making fun of Luongo's oversized knee protection which is the same size as thighboards which are, illegal.

Dana,
if the flaps are what I'm thinking they are, it's got nothing to do with his knee pads; it's just a standard flap on a set of RBK P2's. Just a little bit of an extra protective flap on the outside of the pads. I don't think that they stick out at all on the "traditional" RBK strapping system, as the buckles go over them. But when the straps are adjusted downwards, your thighs push them outwards when you drop into a butterfly.

They do seem to stick out moreso on Luongo's P2's than on anyone else's. But, I can't imagine that they would really do anything to stop a puck, though. Seems a bit of a silly thing to make a gripe about, though. Competition committee or not.

Are thoes flaps really needed. They only came into existance on the PSII.
I say, it's not needed, get rid of it.

It helps to protect the outside of the knee. Especially when players try to bank on off that area when the goalie is against the post but not completely sealed the post off.

Just noticed this oversight in the Globe article:
Quote:
This season the Canucks have a record of 1812-4 and are tied for first place in the Northwest Division with the Minnesota Wild and the Colorado Avalanche, with the Calgary Flames one point behind.
I knew Luongo was doing well but, daaaaamn.

Seriously, if Turco's really worrying about that flap and not just playing head games, he's got some confidence issues.

The only reason turco doesn't have the flaps sticking out because of the way he straps his pads due to the "turco break" otherwise if he kept the straps low than on him too it would be sticking out

first pic shows his strap setup:
