Philly and God Bless America
I'm just wondering why they play God Bless America in Philly as opposed to The Star Spangled Banner and who is the lady on the screen in the older footage?
It's actually pretty cool to watch.
Is it superstition? The lady that sings live does a good job (and is strangely attractive, kinda, umm, nevermind)

It's even cooler that her dad is Gene Hart who was the Flyers announcer for decades and is in the Hall Of Fame.

God Bless America is a cool song and a nice change from the usual 'done to excess' versions one often hears with the national anthem.

Kate Smith is about as big in Philadelphia sports history as Rocky, Bobby Clarke, Bernie Parent, Steve Carlton, John Kruk, Ron Jaworski, Wilbert Montgomery, Doctor J. and Allen Iverson.
When she sang that song live in the play-offs it was mind boggling!

See the link below for the history. She sung live in the 70s and 80s (I think 80s but they would show a replay on the screen) especially during important games.
Flyers History - Kate Smith
Its a great tradition to get the fans going!!

It is tradition in Philly to sing "God Bless America" at Flyer games. I personally think it should be the National Anthem for the USA but no one has asked my opinion I do feel that it is a waste to have Lauren sign along with the video clip of Kate. For years it was used in "big" games, now it seem it is played before every playoff game. The Flyers had an outstanding record, near perfect when they would play the video of Kate singing...then came Ken Wreggett.
The great one himself laughed during the song in 1987 and he and his Oilers got a plane trip back to Edmonton for a seventh game that night.
God Bless Kate Smith!

Wow Smokey; as a philadelphian, it is surprising to see someone from ON knowing that much about philly sports.

Eagles fan since '72 (Bill Bergey and Reggie White were awesome as well)
Loved the Broad Street Bullies era. Parent was a real classy guy in the midst of all those animals.
Dr. J and Chocolate Thunder (DD). When the slam dunk was still a novelty, these guys rocked. Can still see all that glass pouring down on the floor after a Dawkins slam.
Carlton was one of the best of that era, and Kruk just seems like a guy you'd love to have a few beers with.
