The way I understand it, the clot isn't in his vein, ( which leads directly back to the heart), but in his artery, which would have to diffuse out in to the capillaries in his foot.

The danger isn't him stroking out or having a pulmonary embolism, ( clot thrown to the lungs), but having the circulation cut off in his toes to the point of amputation.

As well, his clot is more a mess of dead blood cells from an impact, (like a bruise) not a build up of the last thirty years of cheeseburgers.

For the record, I am not a doctor, but I have seen blood clots and pulmonary embolisms up close and personal.

In fact, have held them in my hand after pulling them out of someone who's on a autopsy table.

( I am a morgue attendant who assists with autopsies. )

If the Flyers get Timmonen and Coburn back, it's a whole new series.

I think I might actually be able to hope pray, and see a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel that isn't the golf green.

Josh

P.S. I too, share the apprehension about the Flyers doctors. I only hope he makes the right decision.

Blood thinners don't dissolve clots, they keep new clots from forming, and keep old clots from getting bigger. Thrombolytics, on the other hand, actually break up existing clots. Their infusion requires one to be in a monitored ICU bed, and meet certain requirements to reduce the risk of unwanted and potentially harmful/fatal bleeding.

Coumadin and Heparin, along with the newer IIb/IIIa inhibitors such as eptifibatide (Integrilin) are common "blood thinners" that we use nowdays, while Retavase and Urokinase (among a few others) are actual thrombolytics that break up existing clot.

Whether or not the clot is arterial or venous is also of large significance, as a previous poster pointed out. You are not going to get a PE from a distal arterial clot, but you may completely lose circulation to the extremity, and, in severe cases, lose a limb or digits on that limb.

And now it sounds like Coburn had a concussion...

Quote:
"Nobody has ever said that to me," Holmgren said. "He got hit in the head with a puck, at a high rate of speed, and he doesn't feel right."

Holmgren said a few days earlier that Coburn had a rough flight back from Pittsburgh after Sunday's game, including lightheadedness and vomiting, but that he had recovered from those symptoms by Monday.

"He is going through some struggles right now," Holmgren added. "He's got a bright future ahead of him and we just want to be careful with him."

Coburn's ability to get through a workout Saturday will likewise go a long way to determining if he can play Sunday.
ESPN - Flyers' Timonen could be back for Game 5, but Coburn's return unlikely - NHL

Hmmm, PCS symptoms yet no one told the GM Coburn has a concussion. if he is allowed to play, the NHLPA needs to file a grievance against the Flyers' medical staff.

So, boys, today is do or die. Which way are we going to go?

I think if both Timmonen and Coburn come back, we have a real shot at winning the game. Remember, game one and two, we were in it right up until the end, when our "D" got a little sloppy, probably due to fatigue.

With the Big 2 back in the lineup, and Timms back feeding the breakout, hopefully they'll get off to a fast start, and if they can continue with the intimidation factor (see Sid and Mike from the last 13 seconds) we may have a decent shot at getting Pittsburgh off their game.

BTW, why was Crosby on the ice with only 13 secs. to go and a 2 goal lead? Why would Therrien expose Crosby to a possible injury like that? I understand why Richards was out, as he is our best face-off guy, but Sid?

I must say, though, with Sid and Mike mixing it up, regardless of the score this afternoon, it's should be a hell of a game.

Josh

Great year for the flyers after posting one of the worst records in the NHL last year...truly impressive. We just got outplayed on both sides of the ice, plain and simple.

I'm especially glad there was no "dirty dogging" at the end of the game...just played hard right through, the way it's supposed to be.

Congratulations to Pittsburgh for the superb season and a chance at the Stanley Cup and also congratulations to the Philadelphia Flyers on a fabulous turn-around season!

Pittsburg Penguins worst to first.....1990-91 Stanley Cup Champions.

Looks like the Flyers fell a little short.
