Cuban reminded me that it might be a good time to start up a new tracking thread for all the moves.

Feel free to post any confirmed player movements NHL / International / Whatever... (No rumors please, start another thread if you want)

Sami Kapanen retires from the NHL

"Flyers winger Sami Kapanen has decided to end his NHL career, announcing his retirement with one season remaining on his contract with Philadelphia.

Kapanen, who will turn 35 on June 14, is the majority owner of KalPa Kuopio, a team in Finland's SM-Liiga. He will wind up his playing career with the club, where he also got his start in hockey. Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen, a Kuopio native who also got his start with KalPa, is a minority owner of the club.

A report in Kuopio-based newspaper Savon Sanomat quoted Kapanen as saying that he informed the Flyers yesterday of his decision. Kapanen confirmed the report via email today.

"It's true. I'm retiring from the NHL and planning to play for KalPa in Finland. ...I will miss the Flyers but it's time to move on," wrote Kapanen.

Kapanen was scheduled to make $1.25 million next season and his retirement will save the Flyers the same amount against their 2008-09 salary cap."

DEVILS SIGN FINNISH FREE-AGENT ANSSI SALMELA TO DEAL

"The New Jersey Devils signed free-agent Finnish defenceman Anssi Salmela on Friday.

Contract terms were not immediately available. The 23-year-old had 16 goals and 16 assists in 56 games with Tappara of the Finnish League last season. His 16 goals were tops among defencemen in the league.

Salmela had 36 goals, 42 assists and 208 penalty minutes in 226 games in the Finnish League. He played his first two seasons with Tappara, and played two with the Pelicans before returning to Tappara this past season.

Salmela represented Finland at the 2004 world junior hockey tournament and this year's world championship event, which was held in Quebec City and Halifax."

Grahame leaves Hurricanes, signs in Russia

"Free agent goalie John Grahame won't be re-signing with the Carolina Hurricanes, as he's inked a deal to play in Russia next season.

Grahame, 32, posted a 5-7-1 record with the Hurricanes this season. He signed a two-year deal with Omsk of the Russian Super League."

Some Marquardt guy signed in Boston. Another pointless minor league signing.
Kobasew and Ward re-signed.

Another from Cuban

Back to Russia for Esche

Robert Esche celebrated his 30th birthday in Russia, where the temperature was 55 degrees below zero.

So it’s fair to say that the former National Hockey League goalie’s decision to spend the next two years playing in the former Soviet Union isn’t based on the weather. Rather, Esche’s choice was born from a season where he learned to love hockey all over again.

“This past year was the best hockey season I’ve ever had,” said Esche, who spent the 2007-08 season playing for Kazan in the Russian Republic of Tatarstan. “I always liked the sport, but now I realize I love the sport. When you’re over there and it’s the only thing you do, you just play and you love it.”

Esche, a Whitebsoro native, has signed a two-year deal to play for a team in St. Petersburg and will leave with his wife and kids for Russia in late July. Esche would not disclose the terms of his contract, but acknowledged that he will be “well compensated” for his work.

Last season with Kazan, Esche split time in goal with former NHL player Mika Noronen during the regular season and finished with a record of 18-2. In the playoffs, Esche was the regular starter and led Kazan to the league semifinals.

He returned to the United States in April, then spent the last week playing for the United States’ national team in the World Championships in Nova Scotia. While there, Esche said he received several offers to play in the National Hockey League next season.

None, however, were attractive enough to convince him to leave Russia.

“Two years ago, I never thought I would have been playing there,” said Esche, who spent eight seasons in the NHL with Phoenix and Philadelphia. “I had to get over my ego that kept telling me I could only play in the NHL. But at end of day, with a wife and a family, you’ve gotta put some things on the back burner.”

Esche turned 30 on Jan. 22, meaning he will still be relatively young when his Russian contract expires in 2010. Esche has not ruled out playing in the NHL then, and has no plans to move from his Westmoreland home.

But with hockey in St. Petersburg beckoning, Esche is ready for the adventure of a lifetime.

“People over here don’t understand it, but I can’t begin to express how nice it is over there and how well they treated me,” said Esche, who played with former NHL stars Alexei Morozov and Oleg Petrov in Kazan. “Now, Kazan is out there. It’s called the gateway to Siberia. But St. Petersburg is only 100 miles from Finland, and it’s much more of a big city.

“In a way, it’s a sacrifice, leaving home. But it’s something I have to do.”

I play hockey with Matt every summer. He scored 43 goals in the "Q" this last season.

He is a great hockey player and a really nice kid.

Before you call him another "pointless" minor league signing, where exactly did YOU play last year?

That's what I thought. Don't bother posting anything else to "retort", I won't be listening or responding.

Back to the tracker....

AS IF Sami is retiring. Philly needs him. He was one of their best energy guys. Big hole to fill.

Josh

I know

This was a big surprise - It's going to be very difficult to replace what he brought to the team.

Played for the Moncton Wildcats, then got traded to the Baie-Comeau Draakers (sp?). Scored 43 goals in 68 games. Not Sid the kid numbers, but certainly worth a look. He was about to re-enter the draft and Boston traded for him to sign him to an entry-level deal.

Boston gave up an AHL ready defenseman for him, I wouldn't call that pointless. He has scored 40 or more goals in 3 of 4 "Q" seasons. He may or may not make it to the NHL, but he's gonna get paid to play hockey, which is more than most of us on this board can say......especially #20.

Side note: Damn good stick-handler, and when he came home his first year from Moncton, played in a tourny against me, and damn, he LIT me up..........

Of course, some argue that the local novice team can do the same, but I digress.....
