So apparently in 2004 the composer sued CBC for wrongfull use of the theme aleging it was being used more often and in circumstances not part of the agreement. I"m not sure how it ended or if it has ended, but that may well be part of CBC's motivation.
Still the optics are not good. For most fans it is the theme they expect, grew up with, and consider part of our tradition and culture.

That was a different person running the show when they let Cuthbert. Nancy Lee who was the head of CBC sports. Scott Moore is the new boss. He's a frequent guest on a local radio station and he sounds like a pretty intelligent guy who is also willing to admit his mistakes.
Deal still possible for Hockey Night song

From what I heard on the radio the lady is asking for alot more than the $500 per week. I could be mistaken but it was in the 2.5 million range.
This song has absolutely no value if the CBC decides to not use it any longer so from what I gathered the composer is the one being greedy not CBC.
I could care less if they changed it for something different.

They didn't say $500/week, they said $500 per use.

It has been reported that Claman is paid $500 for every broadcast that uses the music.
|
If you have a "preview commercial" during the day that uses part of the theme, that's a "use". If you play part of it as the intro when returning from every single commercial break during a broadcast, each intro is a "use". If there are ten commercial breaks and they use the them each time, that's $5,000.
Copyright laws are copyright laws, period. It's not any different than all the fuss over ripping music CDs or sharing files over the internet. The law says that the creator owns the "rights" to the music. If you don't like it, take it up with your government, because it's the law.

Most published music doesn't work that way for royalties. You use what you want to, and you pay a pre-set royalty. I'll bet you CBC is paying a LOT less than $500/use for the Nickelback and Tragically Hip songs they also use all the time.
BTW, the law in Canada as it stands right now does not allow the rights holders to prevent you from ripping a CD, or from using file sharing. As long as it's for personal use, it's a completely different thing than a broadcaster using it for commercial purposes.

Get a new song, let the outcries die down and drop the puck. Once the puck is dropped all will be forgotten. This is a good business move by HNIC. They should own there own song.
Before the last CBC renewal, I was hopping they would not get it. There does need to be a change. But this is not all the change that is needed.
I know CBC has had HNIC for ever but they just are not good at it anymore. The start the broad cast at the puck drop, fill in the first intermition with Don Cherry, the second with Kelly Hrudy and they have Bob Cole. Enough said. If it wasn't for the hockey it would realy suck. They ad nothing to the broadcast of the game.
TSN does it right. They are on the air well before the game to give you some insight and who to watch for. If you have no interest in the teams, they will create some interest and it will make you want to watch the game. Good insight durring the intermissions and highlights and news of other games as they happen.
TSN does the same thing for the CFL. They just do it right.
The only reason I watch HNIC is because the game is on.

You are aware that Don Cherry gets better ratings than the game itself, right?
I agree that TSN does a fantastic job, but CBC sports is still better than every other sports broadcaster in the world besides TSN. And CBC DOES have a 30 min pre-game show as well, have for years, not sure how you missed it.

It's official. The new intro song features Chris Pronger and Martin Brodeur singing "The Bad Touch".
Shout out goes to our own Timberwoof, for providing the costumes.

Yes Don Cherry gets better ratings than the game, and what does that tell you about the overall broadcast. Don bings colour. But he is not as connected to the players, the news and the pulse of the leauge as he used to. He just brings is extreeme opinion to what ever topic. Before you respected what he said, and now it just there for entertainment and the content ignored.
I would agree that CBC probably does a better job than other non Canadian broadcasters. I would say sportsnet does a better job.
Yes they did have the Scotiabank hockey tonight before the game, filled with fluffy interviews, and not with facts and insight that would bring some intrigue to the game that is about to be played. TSN does this right.
You can't argue, that even if Bob Cole is a legend, that is is past his time. He just can't seem to keep up anymore. Atleast they split up Cole and Neal this year.
With the theme song gone, there is an opportunity to overhaul the whole thing, if they dare.
