This is bull****
Deal to keep Hockey Night theme song falls through
Quote:
"Copyright Music & Visuals said it had offered the public broadcaster a chance to renew its licence to use Claman's song — a staple on HNIC since 1968 — on terms that were "virtually identical to those that have existed for the past decade."
Previously, each use of the song cost the CBC about $500, the agency said.
After the first two years of a new agreement, the rates would rise about 15 per cent, an increase Copyright Music & Visuals president John Ciccone called an industry standard.
"We offered to continue paying the richest licence fee in Canadian television, which was the price they asked for," said Moore. "We also offered to buy it outright for a high six-figure sum."
A call made to Ciccone by CBCSports.ca was not returned Friday."

I'm only 18, and yet this is ingrained into my mind. This theme is tradition...

Hockey Night In Canada Theme Announcement:
This afternoon John Ciccone communicated with Scott Moore of CBC and requested a meeting on Monday to further discuss the issues surrounding the Hockey Theme.
At 4:59 PM (one minute before CBC's deadline) Mr. Moore advised that CBC intended to proceed with an announcement of a National contest unless he had the basis for an agreement.
Ms. Claman is saddened and disappointed that CBC is not prepared to negotiate further. A further statement will be made on Monday, June 9th at 5:00 PM.
For a more detailed history of the theme see:

Dear Friends:
It's a sad day.
Effective immediately following the last playoff game of this season the CBC will cease using the Hockey Night in Canada Theme.
A more formal announcement follows below, but first a small but important message... Dolores Claman, composer of the song, would like to express her deepest gratitude to all the many kind people who over the years have said how much the song means to them.
Each time someone called or emailed to use the song in their wedding ceremony, or school project, or family event... or just to tell a story about great childhood memories, it's been a tremendous honour. And though we've received many, none will ever be forgotten.
We will continue with our sheet music, CD, etc. as long as we can and as long as you continue to ask for it.
We'll still be here if you'd like to contact us for any reason. Feel free to send email to John Ciccone: john@hockeytheme.com
Once again, thank you.

According to this, we should be burning Mr.Moore at the stake.

Hunt is right. For a hell of a lot less than $100,000 they should have owned the song out right. It's not like it has any commercial value outside of it's context.
That's really the big mistake CBC made back in 1968, bothering to renew the contract and continue royalties. They hired her to make the song for them, they should have declared it work-made-for-hire, and told her it's now theirs. If they did that up front, it would be theirs and the courts would back them up. By continuing to pay royalties, they have declared it NOT theirs, and forfeited any claim to it.

Show your support for the unofficial second national anthem of Canada. Go onto this link CBC.ca - Contact Us and let them know how you feel about the theme song. I'm sure if enough people make a stink about it, they will negotiate and get this thing straightened out.

As a Michigander, I catch HNIC religiously. The theme song is one I've heard since childhood. After the lockout year, I got goosebumps when I was finally able to hear that song once again. It's not just a theme song for a show. When you hear it, you immediately think HOCKEY.
HNIC is such a refreshing change. Compared to the local Wings coverage, they show lots of pre-game on ice stuff you NEVER see on the local FOX.
To put it in contrast as an American, it would be like taking away "Take me out to the ball game" for baseball lovers. Ask any Cubs fan how that would feel!

Right, but does their mistake make her money hungry?
I can't say I wouldn't pursue all revenue available to me for any work I've done...

Leafer, she is/was making $100,000 per year. They have used the song for the last 30 years. I think she has been fairly compensated. Don't you??

Sure!
So did they... for forty years. Again, it's not her fault for seeking similar compensation to what she's been getting. Maybe the 15% is too high, but you guys seem fixated on what she's already gotten. That's not what's being disputed, if I'm not mistaken.
One of the articles says the terms were similar to what she had gotten for the past ten years. What am I missing outside of the 15% raise? I can agree to the notion that 15% after two years seems like too much, but if it stays at that +15% level for the next eight or the term of the contract, she's not necessarily making out like a bandit.

The song is only worth that much if someone is willing to pay it. Just like anything else in life.
CBC should have just bought the song years ago and been done with it.
If she's making $100,000 a year and "needs" a %15 raise, maybe she needs a new budget.

Or maybe she's got something that's pretty damn desirable and knows it
I love how you guys project images of wasteful opulence and greed on someone who has or can provide something that's very in demand for a top-tier price. Should I start "The 'Official' NHL players get paid too much" thread?
