It's official. The new intro song features Chris Pronger and Martin Brodeur singing "The Bad Touch".

Shout out goes to our own Timberwoof, for providing the costumes.

Hey, I grew up with this song as well. Every Canadian and hockey fan south of the boarder grew up with this song. But we are all getting too emotional.
We need to take a step back.

If the problem is the money, for all of you who really want to keep it, when you contact the CBC tell them you will chip in to pay for the song to be played.

I agree CBC made a mistake that they should have purchased the song from the start. It did not happen and now we have a composer who has made herself and probably an entourage rich off of the song, not only from CBC's money but from other royalties or sales of the sheet music...ect. Did she make enough?

As for myself, I think both parties are wrong in this thing and open to a new theme. If hockey is beeing played after the song, in a few years I will embrace it.

Maybe the leauge needs to explore this as a possible revenue source, to have an NHL theme owned by the leauge where the broadcasters would have to use to create a contenuity and when you hear it you know it is the NHL. Just an idea.

When you hear this, you know it is time for NFL football.

When you hear this you know it is monday night.

I wonder who owns these themes? And wonder if the public be in an uproar if they were changed?

it's funny how the biggest sports night of the week is on a Saturday in Canada.

I hated it when Monday Night Football went to Sunday night. Granted there's still a game on Monday night on ESPN but it just doesn't feel the same.

I recognize VS's, but I hum ESPN's.

Damn, I miss ESPN's coverage just for that music. I'll say that approximately 700 times.

That's because Saturday night is party night, and the thing most people in Canada want to do at a party (house or bar) is WATCH HOCKEY!! Nothing more Canadian than drinking your ass off and screaming at the TV on a saturday night.

My team usually plays on Saturday nights. It was a majority decision to pick saturday to book our home ice (we rent our own and submit it to the league for use in the schedule), because Saturday night means hockey! After the game, it's mad scramble to get changed/cleaned up and race to the bar so we can catch the last period or two of the west coast game on the giant screen while hoisting a couple of post-game pints.

TV ratings for hockey in Canada are strong any day of the week, but the party=hockey connection means saturday will always be THE hockey night (in Canada).

I grew up on that too. Few have been able to call a game like Lecavalier.

Wow...talk about a sucker punch....TSN (owned by CTV) just bought the rights to the song and will play in on their hockey broadcasts.

That music is synonomous with CBC HNIC! I think TSN is doing a dis-service using it. CBC must feel like this was an end around or something. Of course, takes two to tango so maybe there is more than meets the eye.

The article on TSN talks about saving the theme but...it's not the same on anything but HNIC. It's like CBS using the Wide World of Sports theme. I was thinking of that while hearing about Jim McKay's passing.

CTV acquires exclusive rights to 'The Hockey Theme'

Wow what a awesome PR spin on this debacle. Good on TSN.

CBC is really lost most of their sports ground to TSN. It has taken years for TSN to really deliver more hockey games as initially envisioned all those years ago but now I would suggest they have surpassed CBC in even this department.

This just goes to show how out of touch and cheap the CBC has become. Good on CTV for picking up the rights. The reasons to watch CBC coverage seem to dwindle every year, in my book.

The big difference here is TSN/CTV bought the song outright, which is what CBC should have done in the first place 40 yrs ago.

I gotta start posting my private thoughs...well at least some of them.
Yesterday I said to the wife, "I wonder if TSN will buy it....maybe cbc should get the rights to the stompin' Tom song"

I honestly think that next to the original theme the Stompin Tom song is the next most traditional, and the only thing that suitably replaces the original theme unless they want to try to do a total make over, which I think would be a mistake for a show so highly watched and beloved.

It will feel wierd at first though to turn on tsn and hear that song!

TSN paid a boat load of cash out of their CORPORATE wallet for the song.
CBC would have had to pay a boat load of cash from the TAXPAYER'S wallet.
CBC is a government/public broadcaster, CTV is not.

CTV didn't save the song. They saw this coming and would have made sure the rights owner knew they were interested well before all these recent problems started. Its the corporate world...

Government versus private broadcaster, true enough, but it's funny how they both have access to the same advertising market to pay the bills, or in CBC's case, to *help* pay the bills. In recent years the CBC has attempted several dubious cost-cutting measures, only to backtrack due to public anger, and yet despite paying more than they wanted to for Ron McClean and others, they're miraculously still on the air. They just gambled and lost this time, as far as I see it.
