Who here will not be watching HNIC because the song is gone?
If the game is on people will watch. I will still be watching the game.
The only thing that has been turning me off of the game in the recent years is Bob Cole play by play. I would rather not watch the early game, the leafs anyway, with Bob Cole and just catch the late game.

Poor Bob Cole....having forgotten the score of the last game....he's probably being gently ushered out of Joe Louis right now, confused as to why game 7 hasn't started yet.
I don't like to pick on our grey nation (God love them) but I think Bob will need to have his food pre-chewed for him pretty soon.

Of course no one would stop watching HNIC because the song is gone, that would be rather silly to say the least. That isn't really the point.
The point is that the song is part of the HNIC tradition and Canadian tradition. It isn't life or death, but it is a nice little part of how we think of our culture.
Especialy in this day and age and in terms of media, living next to the Media king of the universe means American culture is imported in massive doses daily. That's not nessesarily bad, (sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't) but I think for Canadians it gives us something to hold onto in an ocean of American media, that's all. Like a familiar face in a crowd of strangers.
I'm glad it has been saved, but I would have definately prefered it remain with HNIC. I know Alec M is not a supporter of the CBC in general, and I am, but on this one we pretty much agree.
But yes life will go on, HNIC will go on...Bob Cole...I actualy think he must be retireing soon. I thought it was this season, but they would have made a bigger deal out of it then. I now suspect he is hanging on for the olympics in 2010, but I think he will get fewer and fewer games leading up to that.
I can't wait to hear him announce that Cujo made a big save, and Mario Lemieux scores the winning goal for Canada over the Soviet Union!....oh baby!

On a more positive note, there is still a lot that you can still "hold onto", DeFranco.com

CTV Bought the song, but CTV is a rival of CBC & it will not be used for HNIC. It's the new song for NHL on TSN, Le hockey du Canadien on RDS & will also be played for the 2010 Olympics.

I wouldn't say random, I was told they were the Epitome of Canadian Pop Culture. I know of this site because I was compared to the afro-headed kid on the ladder (in the media clips section of the site).

Probably should've seen a lot of this crap coming when TSN got the rights to covering the Grey Cup last year.

maybe for 12 year old girls in 1976. Still the Defranco family versus Nickleback....I might go with the Defranco family.

I actually can't remember the last time i was sitting in front of the TV when the broadcast began. I usually walk in a few minutes in, so I don't get to hear the song. Won't really miss it.

That's true, you're actually more likely to hear the Nickelback and Kid Rock version of Saturday Night or the "All the Big Guns" song (or whatever it's called). I actually really like the latter one, and always thought they should use it more. I'm guessing now they probably will.
