The Milwaukee Admirals (IHL/AHL) used to do a promotion where they would wear PLAID jerseys once a year and auction them off for charity. It began in the days when Bob Uecker was doing the TV commercials for the Admirals, and did one where he had the idea of giving the team a new look, and the next shot was of players wearing this jersey. I don't think that they were originally intended to be anything more than a joke, but the commercial was such a hit that they started using them for the charity promotion. Here is a pic...

I wear a European jersey in a rec league I play defence in. It is a White Tigers jersey with foreign ads all over it. I always have players asking if they can buy advertising on my jersey.
