Why don't you ask the coach what his plan is? You could just keep putting up consistent numbers and wins to see if that will force him to go with you for the #1 spot.

First, you should title your thread better!!
Second, talk to the coach. Sit down with him/her and get it out in the open. Find out what the plan is for the season. Do it in a calm, collected manner and be polite.

Is there even a such thing as a number 1 in your league? All minor hockey teams where I'm from, house all the way to AAA, goalies alternate regardless during the regular season (playoff is a different story)

"1-2-1 Guy's" mum and dad pay an ice bill too, so the playing time will almost always be pretty close throught the year. Keep winning and you'll play the big ones at the end.

I thought this was just how it was until like juniors? I played AAA pretty much most my life and that is always how it went. Some years I was the stronger goalie and some years I was the weaker goalie. Yeah it sucks when your doing better, but you got to remember the other guy is paying just as much as everyone else. Ice bills and road trips are not cheap and you can't expect the other goalie to pay his share but not get equal playing time. And if he is really that bad and not good enough to play in the league he shouldn't of been put on the team in the first place.

Threaten to quit the team if you are not immediately named starter publicly in the media!
or
Be a team player. No need to bring it up to the coach, either he has to alternate or he knows what he sees and it's his decision. Show him with your play, approaching him about it will put you in a bad light, create tension with the other goalie, etc. Just work hard and keep your mouth shut, and when the important games come you'll be in there...IF you've shown enough.

in HS hockey, you pay to practice, playing isnt guaranteed. if you are not playing you get a free trip to a different town and get to watch the game for free.
thats a plus. Just keep biding your time and when it counts you will get the nod

it's high school hockey, and the league has no rules on playing time. The better kids play and we are in 3rd place in are division, and we have a chance to move up to 2nd and he plays the loosing goalie to.

dang man, sounds like our youth league, where no one wants to hear anyones feelings! I say ask the coach if he wants to win and go to state, or if he wants to make everyone happy.
im sure the back up will be just as happy wearing the championship ring as everyone else is

I would not recommend talking to coach well at least in the way I did , I did yesterfay before my game and it gave me a bad feeling as if I came off bad to him. I am in a similar situation as you as I have split with another goalie but the thing is the other goalie got injured and I got a bulk of the bigs games in the middle of the season. I went something like 5-1 and one and recently the other goalie came back and has split with me. Until coach said the other goalie would split with me in my senior night game even if he played 1 full game on the other game of the week. So I talked to my coach thinking how it was not fair for him to play the goalie who came back more because he was injured because I was playing well. He basically saying how the other goalie was hot but I was playing well which was crap. All I can say is sometimes life is not fair but play well and you will show your coach who is the better goalie.

aves, I can actually understand speaking up in your situation. You shouldnt be playing less because the other goalie got hurt, thats crap. Bad coach's often try to look for the 'hot' goalie because it makes them feel like there doing something meaningful.
OP, bad idea. I get your frustration but totally not your place. If you were in the USHL and you pulled a stunt like demanding more playing time your *** would be on a plane back to wherever before you could say "oops." The coach's perogative is clearly to give equal playing time, at least for now and saying you feel you deserve to be the starter could very well alienate him. If you are going to say something, which i dont advise, I would say something like "hey coach, i was just wondering what the playing time situation is going to be for the rest of the year." Also DO IT IN PRIVATE ask to meet with him or something, if you do it in front of people...very bad idea. DO NOT say something like "do you want to go to states or not" or anything else that remotely resembles a challenge to his authority.
