Ryan Smyth to the Kings for Tom Preissing and Kyle Quincey. How Colorado was able to find a suitor for Ryan Smyth is beyond and a great "tour de force" IMO. He's been on a steady decline for a bit now and with a heavy contract. Great for the Avs to clear some cap space.

Aves also got a 5th round pick. Not that big of a deal. I think this was a good deal Colorado made. Quimcey played well last year, and can only get better at 23 years old. Tom Preissing, has had a few good seasons, but not playing much last year, he should be ready to go for the new season.

Ive heard the Leafs are speaking with 3 potential captains that they havent identified. A friend of mine heard Nonas say it on the radio. He mentioned that there was several players that Burke was meeting with while overseas. He also mentioned that there would definitely be news when he returned and also that Burke had a few free agents that he wanted to speak with here in Canada when he returned.
Hrmmmmm that makes me wonder who it could be.
Captain wise, there's not a tonne of options but I really feel that ONE veteran presence is needed. Just one vetreran signing that could wear the C and provide some leadership on a team that greatly needs one during this rebuild. Kaberle is not that guy. I would have liked to see someone like Laperriere but he went to Philly so who's left that could lead the leafs? Doesnt have to be a scorer, just someone with good leadership qualities that can face the media every night win or lose.
Koivu lives overseas in the off season and he is certainly used to big market pressure and media so he would be an idea. Todd Marchant would be an idea, being that Todd Bertuzzi showed some spirit last year, I wouldnt mind him, Mike Grier is a decent option.
Either way I sit and hope the leafs get Gustavsson, a leader and maybe add some character with a guy like Taylor Pyatt or something, Id love to see a hometown boy in blue and white.

From TSN: Burke says Gustavsson is still noncommittal after meeting with him in Sweden.
He is def taking his time and will make the right/best choice on a team. You know he wants to play, I think out of Toronto, San Jose, and Dallas, his best bet is Toronto. Nabby will play atleast 60 games baring injury, Same with Turco. Toskala, who didn't have a great season last year, only played 53 games, Joseph and Pogge combined played 28 games. Thats a number that if Toskala doesn't play well might go up if Gustavsson is as big of a stud as people claim him to be. Yes, I know Toskala got hurt, but starts were givin before he went down. Another issue is, Toskala's hip, he had surgery, but we all know how a goalies hip can affect him if it's not 100%... Rick DiPietro
