Hello. My name is Greg (nicknamed Graham by some friends/teammates because of my slightly tan complexion). I am the goalie for a roller hockey team called the Demons which plays in a C League (2nd Lowest League at the place we play).
I've been playing for a few years now, since 2002 or 2003, I believe. In that time, I've never sought much help in improving my game or anything and this forum seems like a great place for that.
I've never purchased much of my own gear and a buddy of mine usually supplied me with stuff, but now, he's selling what we have left, so I just recently bought a bunch of stuff online and am planning to buy more. Now I don't make all that much money, so my first set isn't the best, but I don't need anything amazing right now, and this stuff should do the job.
Gear:
Helmet: Itech 1400 (soon)
C/A: RBK Premier 6K (soon)
Pants: Itech 4.8
Pads: Itech 4.8 X Wing
Catcher: Itech 4.8 X Wing
Blocker: Itech 4.8 X Wing
Stick: Koho 550 (bought it used for $18 cause my other stick just broke)
Also ordered 2 Rbk X5 sticks
Skates: Tour Code CarbonGX (soon)
I've heard the 4.8 pads arent that great, but then I also heard they were decent. I tried then on yesterday and it definitely took longer to put on then my older pads, as I am not used to all the straps or the toe tie. They seemed relatively comfortable though, and I read that knee pads will help, so I ordered a pair and I can see why they would/could help.
By the way, can anyone tell me if toe ties work effectively on the Code Carbons? It seems the 2nd wheel will interfere with the regular method of tying.

New goalkeeper from Argentina
Hi all,
I'm 30, french, and been living in Argentina for 5 years where I got married.
When I was in France I was fond of Ice Hockey and would go to support my local team every week.
Until recently I never had the opportunity to play, and when I learned there was Ice Hockey in Buenos Aires I had to go! I began playing in October last year, and in december we had our first game against another beginner team from another ice rink, so we needed a goalkeeper. This is when I began in the net and from this time I stayed in this position
I'm currently playing with the stuff from the school (Bauer C3 pads, catch, blocker and chest) and my player's helmet (with a cage of course).
After reading a lot here on the GSBB, I ordered some Itech X-wing 7.8 pads and a Koho 570 mask as the school pads are actually too short for me and I need the mask for obvious reasons.
From April I will be playing with the beginners and sometimes with the intermediate level.
My main problem is that I don't have a goalie coach, and in these levels I'm the only goalie, so it's hard to improve. I mainly work with vids from the internet.
If you have any advice or good vids to recommend for a beginner goalie, you are welcome!

The company I work for is "Works Alberta". It's a company that owns a bunch of construction companies through Alberta, BC, NWT. Works Alberta is in turn owned by Colas which is the biggest road construction company in the world and is in over 160 countries.
So we have 8 hockey teams through our companies and basically you are drafted every year to play for a certain company. This sort of keeps it fair and keeps some companies from hiring ringers. We play a few times a week for 6 months and at the end of January we have a huge hockey tournament to play for the "Colas Cup". It's actually damn near close to the stanley cup but missing a lot of rings as it's only been around for 8 years or so and the names aren't filling it up fast enough. It's a huge event, coaches, photographers, banquets etc. This year we went to prince george for a week to play in the cup, next year it's in Alaska. Some of our american companies want to put together a few teams so we are hoping in a few years we can have it hosted in California. It's a neat event, all expenses paid for of course.
As silly as it sounds this whole hockey atmosphere is what actually made my decision final on chosing this place over 2 other places with competing offer letters. After being here for a year I can say the choice was a good one.

Hey guys, I'm Paul. I'm 6'0", 245 lbs.
I play roller hockey in a few mens leagues in the area(South Jersey). I am in 3 leagues right now, all of different competition levels. I am thinking of trying out for a few PIHA teams next year.
I don't really know what my style is modeled after, as I play a little of everything depending on the situation. I butterfly a lot on shots from the point but am more of a flopper on shots in close and breakaways.
Here's a few equipment pics:
Brown 212's, 34"
Tour Redline 5000 Skates
Heaton Helite Z Pants
Tour C/A(horrible, will be replacing soon)
CCM PFS 2000 Blocker
CCM PFS 3000 Glove
Itech 1400 Mask
Best action shot I have
Better quality shot, me being lazy waiting for a faceoff

Hi
Hi,
[I would like to apologize for my english first]
I'm 18yo, You can call me «K», «Frenchy», «Pancake» I'm used to it...
I'm french, I'm goaltending since I'm 4, I've been playing in France, Switzerland, Sweden, and Canada. Now I live in Montreal I played AAA and I stopped 'cause I got injured after a stupid bike accident...
I was invited at Team Canada's training camp just to train with the team and it was fantastic and I'm trying to play like Carey Price because I think he's an excellent goaltender with a lot of potential...
My friends always tell me that I'm a little bit freak and random...I think they're right but I don't really care...
Before a game I try to listen some of Johnny Cash's song (Hurt)...
I never talked before a game and I never will don't ask me why...
so that's quite everything...
I'm supposed to attend an OHL camp this summer and another one with the QJHML hope everything's gonna be ok...
I'm 6'0 and 189 lbs,
I'm playing with
Vaughn V3's ICEBERG Pads, Blockers, and Catchers (like Halak and Biron)
Rbk Premiere II Turco Break Pads, Blockers, and Catchers (Blue, Blue, Red, Blue)
Chest/Arms : Vaughn Velocity V3 7500
Rbk Premiere II Pro '08
Pants : Vaughn 7500 Velocity 3
Rbk Sr. Pro - NHLXCH
Skates : Rbk 9K Pump Sr
Sticks : Rbk Premiere II Composite '07/'08 (Huet and Price's colors)
To be honest I don't really like Rbk I prefer Vaughn but since I'm have those Rbk free...
I don't really like Rbk because they're too industrial and they don't really care about hockey they just care about selling...
I've always been a Vaughn fan because they're doing a very good job with their Pads and they're making 'em for Hybrid and Stand Up Goalies (I'm Stand Up)...
Nice to meet you all

hey, I'm hamstercaster.. or Yvon, my real name ;-). I'm 37 years old and started goaltending like many kids on the outdoor rink wearing nothing but skates and a regular player stick. Then I got a used set of equipment my cousin gave me as he bought it of one of our minor hockey association. I started playing nets on outdoor rinks but wearing boots instead of skates. Everything was cool except for the damn flimsy 2 piece C/A protectors they had at the time. Anyone remember these? I had to sew shin guard parts onto the shoulders and arms so I wouldn't get bruised too much .
AFter playing defense for a few years, I started playing nets with our bunch 3 mornings a week. First time on goalie skates and I must say the transition was pretty good. I also played in college in an "internal college" league we had. There were 5 or 6 teams, can't rememeber. Then after college I had nowhere to play and stopped playing nets for about 15 years. Last summer I borrowed my friend's goalie equipment and give it a try again. First game wasn't too bad but my back ached like crazy and I wasn't going to follow suite. Then I was talked into trying it a second time and have been goaltending on average 2 to 3 times a week ever since and I have just purchased some Eagle Fusion pads and Eagle Sentry gloves which I should get this week.
Oh yeah, for some reason they call me the Titan.. may have to do with my size (6'0/280 pounds) or because in English my name kinda rimes with Titan if you pronounce it Yvan the Titan.. go figure..
Oh yeah number 2, I've already learnt a few things here that have helped me on the ice and for that, I'll forever be greatful!!
thanks

I guess I am next.
Name is Andrew and I have been lurking around for a couple of months or so. I was bored when I stumbled accross this sight. I have been sitting at home recovering from shoulder surgery and hopefully will be getting some goalie equipment once the rehab is done in October. I have not played in net since Midget hockey some 15 years ago but am eager to get back into it( I think the wife is getting tired of me talking about hockey).
I have to say I think this board is a great resource for anyone thinking about the position and I have gathered a fair bit of info on equipment, style of play, drills and getting ready for the position physically speaking since i have been out of the net for so long.
So hello everyone and glad to be here.
- Andrew

Hello all,
I'm Craig, 6'0" 210lbs. I'm coming up on 29 years old, but as they say "It's not the years, it's the mileage". I like movies, animals, and women who aren't afraid to really speak their mind. Er... whoops, wrong forum, back to hockey.
I was born in Vancouver, but spent grades 1 through 7 in NY state and Connecticut. As such, I had the crippling misfortune of never playing hockey. I played pretty much every sport but hockey. I played catcher in baseball and was pretty good at it.
In 2002 and 2003, I took a beginners co-ed hockey course. It was lots of fun, and I was hooked. I've been playing defense since then. A couple months ago, my beer league team was playing a very weak team in the playoffs, so I traded gear with our goalie. His gear was way, way too big, falling apart, and stank like death, but I had an awesome time! My girlfriend came out to watch the spectacle, and I wound up getting a 14 shot shutout (only a couple saves were notable).
I know I should have quit while I was a head, but I jumped in head-first. My plan was to get most of the gear used and buy new what I had to. I found this forum and spent hours and hours an hours on here searching and searching and searching, trying to figure out what I needed/wanted. Went to a few brick and mortars to try gear on to get an idea, then back to GSBB for more research. I looked on these classifieds and craigslist, but eventually came to the decision that I was going to buy pretty much everything new. It came down to how much did I want to buy twice vs once, how much longer would new last, and how much did I value gear that didn't stink.
I wound up picking up the following gear from several different stores locally. I think I've done alright:
Mask: Eddy GT Ultimate (Maltese gel on order)
Skates: Graf 750 Goaler Pro
Sticks: Sherwood 9950 27" Paddle
C/A: Vaughn Epic 8600
Pads: Vaughn Velocity 7400
Trapper: Vaughn Velocity 7400
Blocker: Vaughn Velocity 7400
Pants: Vaughn XP Custom
Jock: Vaughn Velocity 7500
Knee: Vaughn VKP 8000 (on order)
Neck/Clav: Maltese Combo (on order)
It seems I'm quite the Vaughn fan, but I got a very sweet deal on the 7400 set and the pants, jock, and C/A just happened to be the most comfortable that I tried on (each from different stores too). I'll post more thoughts and questions in the appropriate threads for my various gear.
As for my abilities, I'm an absolute beginner obviously, but I do have quite a bit of natural instincts for the position (physically and mentally). I'm looking to get as much ice time as possible over the summer and find my way onto a second winter team as a goalie.
I took Paul Fricker's goalie clinic earlier this month. It was my first time getting all my gear on ice. It was pretty good, and I took away from it some good fundamentals to keep in mind as I teach myself how to move and play. I've had three sessions with pucks after that, and have been getting more comfortable and having more fun each time. Though I do have two large bruises on my lower thighs from two of the sessions already (note that my knee pads are on order ), but that hasn't bothered me. As the man said: "Pain don't hurt".
The last thing I'll add to this opus is that I've noticed that for every ounce of experience I've been gaining over my short career, I've gotten more out of re-reading the advice and wisdom on this board. I'm hoping that will continue well on into the future.
Craig
