I think youv'e got your holidays messed up man
Yom kippur is the solemn holiday. (day of attonement to god). generally. NOT happy day
Chanuka is happy. It's the festival of lights.
here, wiki explains it so much better than me

Hanukkah, from the Hebrew word for "dedication" or "consecration", marks the re-dedication of the Temple after its desecration by Antiochus IV and commemorates the "miracle of the container of oil." According to the Talmud, at the re-dedication of the Temple in Jerusalem following the victory of the Maccabees over the Seleucid Empire, there was only enough consecrated olive oil to fuel the eternal flame in the Temple for one day. Miraculously, the oil burned for eight days - which was the length of time it took to press, prepare and consecrate new oil.

lol, no I know all that now. That's why I think the "Happy Yom Kippur" incident (in hindsight) was funny. I got a very strange look from my Jewish co-worker after I said it.
And I know the story of Chanuka, but I was still not under the impression that it was a "happy" type day. Guess I was wrong about that.
P.S. Wikipedia leaves out the robot army. You might want to revise that.

CK,
Maybe Im naieve (sp?) but where does this really happen? Does it come on the news that maybe I missed it? Is there something factual, on record, that a Christian or Christian group in some State actaully does these things.
As a Catholic, although I don't practice it as I should, I never once have seen or heard such things.

I don't know why people even care as much as they do. People have said Happy Chanuka to me before, and even though I'm Catholic I replied in suit with a hearty Happy Chanuka. But maybe I'm just not a fairy who's life has been scarred because I had to go to a Christmas party. Cupcakes and cookies and brownies, HOLY **** I'M SO OPPRESSED.
You know what you say to your Jewish kid when he comes home and says "Hey dad, there was a Christmas party in school today, I feel oppressed and demand recourse!"?
"Well listen, 74% of the US celebrates Christmas, that's why it's more dominant than Chanuka parties. Now get thicker skin and stop whining."

shush. the robot army is a secret. we hold it in place for times of great crisis
Surprisingly, they run off Olive Oil too.
but no worries. Chanuka is actually a very Glorious holiday. it really is the celebration of freedom from oppression and all that fancy jazz
so say Happy Chanuka all you wish. if a jew gets angry at you for it, They're stupid.
But look at it from this way (back to the main point). some of you say you will say Merry christmas to everyone and that you'll be damned if you say happy holidays.
Imagine 5 / 100 of you only celebrate christmas. the other 95 celebrate Chanuka. Everyday for a month everyone says to you "happy chanuka!!!!!!"
insensitive isn't it?

do what the majority does son, stop being an individual. you are not a beautifull and unique snowflake.
I know. we need another crusade. this wouldn't happen if 99% of the world celebrated the same holiday. So i think to avoid anyone from having APPOSING VIEWS, everyone should just convert and accept?\

Wal-Mart wishes you a Merry Christmas
Posted 11/8/2006 11:03 PM
By Jayne O'Donnell, USA TODAY
Wal-Mart will put "Christmas" back into the holidays this year, the retailer plans to announce Thursday.
A year after religious and other groups boycotted retailers, including Wal-Mart (WMT), for downplaying Christmas, the world's largest retail chain will have an in-your-face Christmas theme this year.
"We, quite frankly, have learned a lesson from last year," says Wal-Mart spokeswoman Linda Blakley. "We're not afraid to use the term 'Merry Christmas.' We'll use it early, and we'll use it often."
Wal-Mart told about 7,000 associates of the plans at a conference last month and "was met with rapturous applause. ... We know many of our customers will feel the same," says John Fleming, Wal-Mart's executive vice president of marketing.
Fleming says the retailer, which recently lowered prices on toys and electronics, will be pitching Christmas almost as much as "value" to holiday shoppers.
New this year:
• A TV ad trumpeting Christmas will air for the first time next week. Wal-Mart also will air TV ads along with the Salvation Army mentioning Christmas.
• The name of the department with Christmas decorating needs will change from The Holiday Shop, which it was for the past several years, to The Christmas Shop.
• Store signs will count down the days until Christmas, and Christmas carols will be piped throughout the season.
• About 60% more merchandise will be labeled "Christmas" rather than "holiday" this year over last.
The Christmas spirit is spreading. Macy's, the largest U.S. department store chain, plans to have "Merry Christmas" signs in all departments. All of Macy's window displays will have Christmas themes. At New York's Herald Square, the theme will be "Oh, Christmas Tree."
"Our intention is to make every customer feel welcomed and appreciated, whether they celebrate Christmas or other holidays," spokesman Jim Sluzewski says.
As at Wal-Mart, Macy's employees are encouraged to consider wishing customers holiday greetings that are appropriate to their race or religion, including Happy Kwanzaa or Feliz Navidad.
Sometimes, even the best intentions can backfire. The Catholic League, one of the groups fighting what it calls the Christmas Wars, says a member alerted it that Macy's was pitching a "Happy Hanukkah" gift card but not a "Merry Christmas" one.
After he was contacted by the group, Sluzewski determined a production "glitch" meant the Merry Christmas gift cards were available everywhere but in its Western region, where there were plenty of Happy Hanukkah gift cards.
"We are correcting the problem," Sluzewski says. "Of all the cards to have a glitch with."

Y'ever watch Fox News? Bill O'Reilly? Nancy Grace? Lou Dobbs? (well ok, he's on CNN but you get the point)
I can't tell you how many times, in the past three years, I said "Happy Holidays" to someone and in response got an angry look and a mean-voiced "Merry Christmas" back. It really bugs me because I really LIKE Christmas. I just like to be cautious, and don't want to say "Merry Christmas" to someone only for them to say "I'm Jewish" or something - hence the "Happy Holidays" safe choice.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think this is like the mission of all Christians everywhere. But there is a movement, I suspect among a few sects, to raise the "Christmas is about Christ" issue and INSIST that everyone say Christmas instead of Holidays. The TV personalities may only cover it because they like controversy, but they've made a season about goodwill and peace into bitterness and divisiveness, and I'm super angry about it.
P.S. #1 on the list of things I'm looking forward to this year? It's my first Christmas at the ACLU - that means I get to open "Hey ACLU, Merry F*ing Christmas" cards!!!

I don't know if I'd say "insensitive" but I think it's MORE considerate to try and be all-inclusive.
Did Jesus have dermatitis? Is that the reason he could walk on water? It obviously wasn't thick enough around the forehead area.... Or the palms of his hands, for that matter.

Its sad that groups have this much power to cause a large company to take this type of "all in your face" course.
My argument still stands, though, that we should not allow ourselves to be consume with words that have a "religious" background/meaning to it.
Whether one say "Happy Chanuka" and one says "Happy Christmas" to each other should be irrelevant.
