Supposedly, Osama bin LAden, in his stated and published words, had three goals that lead up to the 9/11 attack.

1. Get US troops out of his homeland (Saudi Arabia)

2. Get the price of oil over $100/barrel (felt his country was giving away its fortune and livlihood)

3. Get the US invloved in a long, protracted middle eastern conflict to either bankrupt it or at least seriously hurt its economy, as he felt he did to the Soviet Union in Afghanistan.

The first was accomplished a little over a year ago, as Bush removed US tropps from Saudi Arabia.

The second has happened already.

The third? With what we're spending in Iraq, you tell me?

So who is going to claim victory or success, the conservatives and Bush supporters, or Bin Laden and his supporters?

Have we all been duped?

Our involvement in Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, other than having 9/11 used as an excuse to invade Iraq. That Bush was going to do that was clear before he was elected, and was discussed amonsget people who study recent history in 1999. I wish I had the emails I sent people back then pointing that out, but they were on an old computer and not saved when the PC died.

That's true. No-bid contracts to companies that you have connections with rule the day...

Donald Rumsfeld is a monster.

Firedoglake » Rummy and the Generals for Hire

Quote:
DELONG: Politically, what are the challenges because you're not going to have a lot of sympathetic ears up there.

RUMSFELD: That's what I was just going to say. This President's pretty much a victim of success. We haven't had an attack in five years. The perception of the threat is so low in this society that it's not surprising that the behavior pattern reflects a low threat assessment. The same thing's in Europe, there's a low threat perception. The correction for that, I suppose, is an attack.

Obviously that quote was taken totally out of context from the rest of the interview. Perhaps you should find the rest of the interview from the original source?

For the sake of full disclosure Timby, you should call out U.S. generals as the monsters that they are, at least that's what we should gather from this piss poor excuse for an "article".

What a joke.

I believe what Timber is trying to say is to look at the number of logical fallacies that Rumsfeld is committing here.

I count 4.

Fallacy: Appeal to Fear
Fallacy: Confusing Cause and Effect
Fallacy: Slippery Slope
Fallacy: Two Wrongs Make a Right

The problem is that Rummy is saying because of the 'success' in Iraq there have been no terrorist attacks. And because there has been no terrorist attacks that we have been successful. And finally that if we do not remain ever fearful of an attack and lash out any perceived threat that one will happen.

What Rumsfeld appears to be saying is that in order to keep the Republicans in power, what's needed is another terrorist attack against the US.

It appears that really isn't what he's trying to say.

It's just more "Bush is Hitler", "OMFG teh Neocons!!!" crap.

Yeah. So why'd Bush cause 9/11 right after he got elected? Shouldn't he have personally knocked down the twin towers right before the '04 election?

Interestingly enough, the Republicans may very well be able to hold onto the White House despite the fact we haven't been hit since 9/11.

For the sake of the country's economy and international prestige (which it is remarkable how quickly people have switched from insisting that the US is the greatest country in the world and the rest of the world had better agree to denying that it matters what the rest of the world thinks) I hope that Obama wins.
