Beaver, cool to know you're down with the brotha's. Why did Red1 leave the group initially? Creative differences?

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5...The Message. ALL TIME classic. The first political rap song to be made. I heard it in '83 and i went out to buy their tape, which i still have. Keep your tapes bro, they'll be collectibles. Of course if you own any 12" singles, well those are gold

My history starts with:

Grandmaster Flash, LL Cool J, Run DMC, Fat Boys, Kurtis Blow, Kool Roski, UTFO, Afrika Bambata, Schooly D, Big Daddy Kane, EPMD, MC Lyte, Kool G Rap, Whodini, Roxane Shante, Eric B and Rakim, Special Ed, Biz Markie, Son of Bizerk, Jungle Brothers, Das EFX, Gangstarr, Public Enemy, BDP, Maestro Fresh Wes, 3rd Bass, Rob Base and Easy Rock, ...i could go on and on...

The ones that fell off that i wish could come back:

Jeru the Damager, Craig MacK, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, BlackSheep, Chubb Rock, ...

No love for K-OS? I know he's more R&B but still.

I seen 3OH!3 and Snoop Dogg last weekend and Bamboozle . Also a bit of Tyga, not my choice. Playing before 3OH!3 went on for their set.

MySpace.com - 3OH!3 - BOULDER, Colorado - Rock / Electronica / Thrash - www.myspace.com/3oh3

A couple of kids in my town are producing their own hip hop album, oh dear god.

Devastatin' Dave The Turntable Slave isn't bad either.

Hockeywall...i have both of K-OS's albums. He's ai'ight, and i can appreciate his being true to the b-boys/b-girls. He did dedicate 2 tracks to us, and i LOVE Superstar part 0! I used it as a music piece for a show my students and i did at the Ottawa CNA a few years back. Good memories

I haven't really listened to rap/hip-hop in 5-6 years, and the music has been a heaping pile of dung for most of the last decade, but there are a few groups I'll always listen to, and a couple newer ones as well:

Newer: Atmosphere. Very well-written and old-schoolish. If you haven't heard their stuff, DL a few tracks.

Always: Just about anything Wu-Tang or Boot Camp Clik (except the newest stuff, which is pretty weak). Older RZA production can't be beat.

I hate to admit I like Eminem, but I do.

ok, this thread is steering into rap, cheese territory. It started off Hip Hop with good, talented musicians being discussed, however it has gone down the lines of Eminem to name but a few. If you are unaware of the workings of, Gangstarr, Guru, Tribe, De la, Del, KRS, to name but a few, i suggest some time should be taken to listen to these artists, and then discuss Hip Hop. If you want to discuss cheesey rap and R&B, please start a new thread.

ps: i hate to break it to you, but Gangstarr, Guru, Tribe, De la, Del, KRS, etc are "rap". Rap isn't just the cheesey commercial stuff. Its all of it.

Ok...it's obvious that there is a gap in eras due to age differences. I think we can separate the MCs by "In the beginning", late '70s and '80s"..."The big bang!", all '90s ..."The new school", 2000 to now.

I myself am more familiar with the 2 first ones, as i've kinda lost contact with my information sources for what's happening now...unless they are older MCs from back in the day still kickin it

And i think the prior quote of "Gangstarr, KRS, Tribe, ..." as not being rap/Hip Hop, was misunderstood and misread. I believe he tried to say that THEY represent the culture the most and to the fullest. My observation...

people are mis reading what i am saying, those guys represent the culture, hip hop is about the culture, and MY opinion is that some of these new, as i would call them 'R&B, or Rap artists' do not represent the Hip Hop culture.

Gotchya, I understand man, and its true, the newer style guys dont really represent culture AT ALL. Now, learning about Gangstarr, Camp Lo, and Denizen Kane, i really understand.
