I used to be an avid LP record collector. Not the type that hunted down special edititons or or stuff just to have, but as an avid music lover. Had several thousand at one point.
While we lived on our boat and had a lot of stuff in a storage facility, someone broke in, and took several boxes of records including:
- all my rock alphabetized from middle M through early Z
- all my classical "shaded dog" RCA and original Mercury Living Presence releases
- about 200 new purchases I bought after moving onto the boat and never had a chance to listen too.
BTW, this was far from a
really big record collection. I have several friends or acquintences with well over 10,000 records, and two with over 20,000. One has about 35,000, all carefully cataloged and shelved in a separate temperature and humidity controlled room. He claims he's listened to them all but at 45 minutes each on average, that would be 14 years of listening 5 hours a day every single day just to hear each of them once.
They also got my Nitty Gritty 2.5FI record cleaner, which had just been refurbished at the factory. It'll cost about $500 to replace that one of these days.
I also collect coffee makers (though just one of each type, no need to have two of the same kind).
I used to collect 1/24 die cast cars, but turned that over to my son, and just kept a few classic Buragos for myself.
My wife thinks I collect stereo equipment, but it's more that I keep my old gear even when I replace it with new gear. I figure everyone should have eight or nine nice sets of speakers and at least three or four good amps around the house.
And though I don't really think of it as collecting (even if my wife does), I subscribe to several magazines, and never throw the old issues out. We have many years worth on shelves or in boxes.
