what astounds me is the fact that a judge near the conversation apparently demanded an apology?!?

WTF i understand johnny boy being a moron because he always has been, but how the HELL did a near by judge not understand the comment?

feel free to google johnny boy's name for plenty more moronic escapades lol.

you couldn't be more right.... he is the one black man here in dallas that is just horrible when it comes to any conversation magically becomes a racial debate... he can twist words and phrases and even how you look at him or anyone and make you a damn kkk member..... I think the man is truly a waste.... he pops up here and there when someone says the N word as Jackson and Sharpton would and they demand action.... Im glad to hear that someone stood up and basically told him to calm his ass down.... last time that happened someone downtown lost their job and was sued for racism.

Do they use the phrase "African-American" in the geographic (continent) sense, rather than the government (country) sense? Or do they just say "black"?
Anybody know? I'm really interested in this actually.

In Canada, we call black people.... wait for it......

.

black people. That's right. And not a single black person I've ever met has taken offense to it. I've also heard african-canadian, but that's a rarity.

There are fools on both sides of the fence. And often, it's the fences themselves, real and imagined, that limit even the most basic forms of communication and understanding. Curtis Mayfield of the Impressions wrote a song titled, 'This Is My Country'........maybe....someday.

I posted these a couple of years ago in the Funny Video Thread. I thought they were appropriate for the topic at hand.

It is all very tiring.
I might be misinterpreting what you are saying, cajun, but I think part of the problems are these generalizations that are made.

While Oprah might be a positive icon for minorities and the traditionally under-privileged (black AND female), I hardly think she speaks for all the minorities out there. And I seriously doubt that the "minority community" all wants the same thing - keep in mind the diversity you mentioned.

I suspect that most minorities want the same things white people do - to be recognized individually, not solely as "black" or "Asian" or some sort of "other", but as having an identity that, yes, includes different cultural influences. When Oprah talks about the world being colorblind, I'm sure she is speaking of prejudice, when someone wants to be "embraced for their color and diversity", they are talking about being accepted as equal, though they may differ in physical appearance and cultural heritage. It is the difference between a white man saying to a black man "you are just like me" instead of simply saying "we are alike" in order to be accepting. The equality is recognized, but only at the sake of the black man's unique experience as an individual (male, black, black male, American, and so on).

I will agree with this. The thing is, the fence will only stay up so long as people wait for the easy way out, or for someone "else" to make up their minds. The "minority community" isn't going to say "Hey, white folks, here is a list of what is acceptable to call each of us, and here is exactly how each of us wants to be referred to in every situation imaginable." It takes effort from both sides.

I know that -- I was pointing out that each culture has its morons. Just as he is sad to be categorized (as a person of the same race) with the likes of JWP, I am sad to be categorized with the likes of Hagee, whether it be as a person of the same race, as a person of the same religion (Christianity, not denomination-specific), or as a person of the same "right" (as opposed to left) principles.

Idiocy is colorblind!

When I have to fill out forms that require an ethnic or racial indication, either just write in "This was a favorite question of the Nazis" or, I check other, and write in Mesopotamian-American.

We couldn't get library cards unless we checked one of the boxes for ethnic/racial background. I put Mesopotamian-American, my son checked "other" and wrote in Mexican-American, and my wife wrote in "foreigner." They made her change hers, but she refused to check the "hispanic" box, and wrote in "Mexican" instead.

All this just to get a library card...

you know... thats the thing that drives me a bit crazy...

there are so many organizations that are specifically black this or black that or 'instert alleged minorty status name here*' that all seem to an OK thing to do.

but if i were to go start a Caucasian American Awareness Society or C.A.W.S. and i started to promote it to Caucasians and asked them to join the C.A.W.S. ... i would be strung up!

i would be considered a racist! or a white eliteist... any number hugely negative things.

but if i did the same exact thing and had it focus on a 'minority*' group i would be considered a humanitarian!

the * next to minority refers to the fact that im white... and honestly i am so not the majority as far as race population goes.

not sure what the rest of the country is like but here in Texas it looks like this:

Texas Politics - Racial and Ethnic Population Trends in Texas, 1850-2000

all frustration aside... i dont give a rats ass what race some one is. i judge people based on their actions.
