Tips on Car Rental

I am picking a rental car up in Chicago and dropping it off in Kansas City, MO. It is so expensive to do this. Any tips on how to get a better price?

One way rental is always more expensive than if you drop it off where you pick it up. Not much you can do honestly about it.

If you have low morals, rent it like you're picking up & dropping off at the same place, then have it ''break down'' at your real destination. Sleazy but effective.

classy!

or you could sign up for that thing that allows you to only pay a certain amount and gas is just free. you would save some serious money there.

I'm curious as to how this works, as they will just bring you another car and expect the contract to still be honored. (With a discount for the inconvenience.)

This was rampant at U-Haul years back, and many rental companies put policy into effect to avoid it. Better be be a good BS'er, and somewhat handy mechanic, if you take this route!

Not sure how to get around the pricing...But...

I just got back from a trip to Chicago and Alamo had the lower prices for similar vehicle while I was there (rented and returned at O'Hare).

WOW...I just looked at the site. I rented a mid-size SUV while there. They are quoting $291 to pick up and return at ORD (wed-mon) and $780 to return to KC!

$500 difference?

You might want to try hotwire.com or kayak.com. Also check out discounts from Costco or BJ's warehouse clubs and entertainmentbook 2008.

I checked with all the minors and majors and the cheapest I can find for 6 days is $578. That is total BS. I understand not dropping the car off at the same place but can't they rent the car in KC? Seems like a huge ripoff. Besides I am basically cheap.

Hubster flies a lot for business. On July 3rd, his flight out of NY was delayed, so that he missed his connection in Detroit to fly home. As it was the last flight from DTW to AZO that day, he did a one-way rental for the 125-mile trip.

The cost to one-way rent a car for two hours the day before a holiday weekend?

$380.00

If you don't HAVE to have a car along the way (side trips, overnights with relatives along the way, etc.), you're better off flying or taking a bus or train.

I'd say dig for discount codes online. There are websites that have tons of promotional codes that you can use for online renting.

They are typically big discounts.

But sounds like its gonna be a big bill regardless.
