Can you check an open bottle of whiskey on a flight?

Um, read the title.

Thanks!

Checked bag? I don't see any reason why not. Let us consult our friends in Homeland Security:

TSA: What To Know Before You Go

Doesn't mention whether or not the containers must be sealed, but it seems as though it should be allowed.

It said from the Duty Free Shop on the TSA page, which indicated a sealed bottle purchased on-site to me.

I'll give it a go and just let them know so they don't think I'm sneaking crap on the plane.

Only if I can fly in business class so I can have a hot towel to throw at people.

Wouldn't Duty Free purchases be carry-on by default?

You'd be surprised what you can bring in your checked luggage. A couple years ago my Dad was taking care of my great uncle's estate after he passed away. Among the few items that my Dad wanted to keep was a bad ass machete. Having no other practical way of getting the giant blade home, he stowed it in his checked baggage. He said the ticket agent looked at him funny when they found it in his luggage (they chose his bag for a random "drug check"), but they let him keep it, no questions asked.

I don't know. The only thing I note in the airport is how long it takes me to get out. The place sucks.

Carry-on: Yes, but some restrictions apply.
Checked: Yes
You tell me how that makes sense. It's from their website.

I can't believe I used to defend the TSA...

After carrying my hockey gear, I was surprised I wasn't charged with bioterrorism I'll take your story as a good thing for me, though. Maybe they just won't care.

A near-full bottle of 16-year-old Bushmills single malt. I've been nursing this thing forever.

Liquids in carry-on bags are maxed out at 3 ounces. Anything more than 3 ounces will be confiscated at the security checkpoint (if they catch it).

Liquids purchased AFTER you've gone through the security checkpoint have already been cleared by security. That's why you can carry on more than 3 ounces *if* it has the little "I was purchased inside the airport" sticker on it. This goes for a bottle of water, soda/pop, juice-box, or booze from the duty-free shop.

There is actually a department of the airport that is in charge of inspecting and delivering things to the vendors beyond the security checkpoint. (A friend's wife was pretty high-up in the organization until she had another kid... she made INSANE money.) Every restaurant, store, and newspaper kiosk has to have all of their deliveries go to this one department, then an airport employee will deliver it to the store/restaurant.

Checked baggage is fair game... just keep in mind that anything you check may or may not be in your bag when you get where you're going. I recommend finding odd-colored zip-ties (cable-ties is another word for them - I got some fluorescent pink/yellow/orange ones) and use those to secure all your zippers. (Just put a pair of nail-clippers in your carry-on bag to open your suitcase at your destination.) If they open your bag to inspect it, they'll have to put a TSA zip-tie on to replace it, so you'll know your bag was opened. And if it's Joe the Baggage Handler who opens your bag, the chances of him being able to find the exact same color of zip-tie are pretty low.

Oh, and my boss once checked a spiral-sliced ham in his suitcase. He was flying out to meet his family at his in-laws' house, and he had to bring the Heavenly Ham for their Christmas dinner.

I packed an open 26 of Bailey's back from Mexico in my checked baggage. When we got back, it had shattered and soaked my luggage. Had to wring out my socks into my morning coffee :P However the sealed bottles did not break. Pressure difference?

You'll have to check it below in your suitcase.

Even a duty free bottle gets sealed in a plastic bag at the duty free shop. You can't have a nip at the airport and then bring the open bottle on the plane (even if you do show your duty free receipt etc).

If you wring your socks out you may have gotten some of the Baileys back

My understanding is you can bring open liquids, hair sprays, shampoos, even open liquor as long as it is checked. 3 ounces or less for carryon but I think the whiskey for carryon may be a tough one to get through unless you are flying through Midway, then no worries.
