Liquids in
carry-on bags are maxed out at 3 ounces. Anything more than 3 ounces will be confiscated at the security checkpoint (if they catch it).
Liquids purchased AFTER you've gone through the security checkpoint have already been cleared by security. That's why you can carry on more than 3 ounces *if* it has the little "I was purchased inside the airport" sticker on it. This goes for a bottle of water, soda/pop, juice-box, or booze from the duty-free shop.
There is actually a department of the airport that is in charge of inspecting and delivering things to the vendors beyond the security checkpoint. (A friend's wife was pretty high-up in the organization until she had another kid... she made INSANE money.) Every restaurant, store, and newspaper kiosk has to have all of their deliveries go to this one department, then an airport employee will deliver it to the store/restaurant.
Checked baggage is fair game... just keep in mind that anything you check may or may not be in your bag when you get where you're going. I recommend finding odd-colored zip-ties (cable-ties is another word for them - I got some fluorescent pink/yellow/orange ones) and use those to secure all your zippers. (Just put a pair of nail-clippers in your carry-on bag to open your suitcase at your destination.) If they open your bag to inspect it, they'll have to put a TSA zip-tie on to replace it, so you'll know your bag was opened. And if it's Joe the Baggage Handler who opens your bag, the chances of him being able to find the exact same color of zip-tie are pretty low.
Oh, and my boss once checked a spiral-sliced ham in his suitcase. He was flying out to meet his family at his in-laws' house, and he had to bring the
Heavenly Ham for their Christmas dinner.
