Very Quiet Friday Night.

I'm home on a Friday night not because I couldn't be out, but because I didn't want to. Long day, long week, and all I wanted to do was blast my saxophone and record some vocals for some songs. No one is studying. People are out. Everyone is awake. I feel more creative and loose at night. I have a new mouthpiece. I have a lot of lyrics written.

And then my freaking roommate in the other bedroom has to come tell me to stuff it cuz he has to get up early in the morning for work.

Planet earth blows.

End very angry rant.

Sorely tempted to. Right now I'm fantasizing about rocking my accordion next to his face. I've been on this streak lately where I'm tired of being the guy who loses out when people can't both get what they want.

Thing is, he's not a bad guy, and he's got to work.

Angry. Angry. Angry. Brent Hulk smash!

You've got a saxophone and an accordion, that's pretty cool.

Three questions.

1. Is the sax hard to learn? I was thinking of picking it up in the nearer future.

2. What's a good brand for a non-god awful price?

3. Can you play any of Weird Al's polkas on your accordion?

Welcome to the world of room mates. For 13 years I had room mates and while I had a lot of good times, there was many bad as well.

Hey at least your food is still in the fridge, I used to come home from work and find all my food gone cause my room mates got baked and ate it. And there was one time a room mate and his girlfriend stole $300, half my clothes, my shoes and stereo then moved to BC.

I also had this room mate that would just have loud sex with his lady like all day and night so one day when the rest of us went to work and he was home sleeping with her, I set my winamp to repeat, turned my amp up to 7, blasted "the hampster dance", locked my door and left for work.

There's a hundred more stories like that.

1) Like anything, it helps if you've played another instrument before and you'll pick up the next one faster if you have.

That said, the saxophone is probably the easiest wind instrument to learn. The ombature (however you spell that. It's how your mouth goes on the mouthpeice) is very forgiving and flexible, and since it's a conical woodwind, the upper octave is the same fingerings as the lower octave, so learning the notes is easier than say a flute or clarinet.

The drawback of the saxophone also comes with one of its strengths - since the ombature is so flexible, it is easy to play and easy to bend notes expressively. However, if your goal is simply to play in tune, it is one of the more challenging instruments out there. That said I still think it is one of the easiest wind instruments to get a basic ability on if not the easiest.

2) I haven't played a ton of different saxophones so it's hard to say. I own an alto by a company called "Antigua Winds" that I've always been satisfied with. It's this model Antigua Winds, Inc. - Saxophones

They're a little heavy for altos, but oh well.

I think this is the same thing http://cgi.ebay.com/Antigua-Winds-Alto-Saxophone_W0QQitemZ280273246041QQcmdZViewItem?hash =item280273246041&_trkparms=72%3A1205|39%3A1|66%3A 2|65%3A12|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14#ebayphot ohosting

I'm not sure exactly what they cost but I think they're usually one of the more affordable models.

Anything by Selmer is good as long as it's in decent condition. A friend of mine had a Conn that I tried out that felt fine although they're more known for their brass. Don't buy a Bundy - they're the essence of cheapo.

I haven't played them myself, but lately the Cecilio model that has flooded ebay has caught my interest. I've been thinking about buying a tenor and they're very affordable. They look solid enough from here.

I wish I could be more helpful but I'm just not that knowledgeable about the various models. Do you have Facebook? A friend of mine on there was helping me pick out a mouthpiece and he seemed to know a lot. PM me if you're interested in getting in touch with him.

3) I've never tried. I guess I should. I'm not that great at it but it's fun.

I am a drummer myself, but, have played alot with saxaphone players. I especially love when I get to rock with a guy that is playing a baritone sax. Really rocks and shakes the roof off of the house!! Anyway, I am into Dave Matthews Band and they had an excellent saxaphone player, whom also played flute, clarinet, penny whistle and any saxaphone made. Unfortunately he just died of complications due to an ATV accident. I don't know if the band will ever be the same or how they will recover. Anyway, which type of sax do you play?? Do you play them all or do you play an alto, tenor, soprano, etc.?? Oh, and I have been blessed to never having to have a roommate. Do wives count as roommates??? Oooops!!

I own an alto and play that the most, but I can play any of them. I haven't ever played soprano although I'm sure I could. Tenor I haven't done a ton but it's good.

Bari on the other hand, I played a lot in high school and absolutely love. It's nice to hear someone else who appreciates them. I wish I could get my hands on one! It's so hard to find a decent used one and I've never seen a new one for under a thousand dollars. I used to use them in my recordings regularly when I had access to it through the school in high school. I need to get in with some of the band kids here at college and see if anybody owns their own that I could borrow now and again. One of my favorite things to do is to play with just a drummer, and one of my favorite instruments to do that with is the bari.

Yeah the Dave Matthews sax player blows my mind. It's too bad he passed away. I saw them live once at AT&T park and he was just incredible.

If you want to hear some great bari sax action I highly recommend the band Morphine, by the way.
