Thanks everyone for a fun session this week.
The main theme was Positional Play and the tactical emphasis was on forward angle reads and using proper initial depth.
I challenge each of you to start using a simplified process that includes the following steps:
1) Make the initial play read and adjust to your basic starting depth
2) Adjust for the major angle
3) Re-read the developing play and make small angle adjustments
4) Adjust depth in or out if needed
5) Make the save using the technique that best allows you to...
6) Control the rebound effectively
7) Recover and reset for the next shot sequence
As we discussed during the video and classroom analysis, this entire process happens in a fraction of time and must become a subconcious action, much like checking the blindspot when you drive.
A simplified depth and angle approach allows you to read and anticipate, allowing you to play a more patient read and react style. Square, set, on angle saves allow you to control the puck and minimize rebounds which will lead to fewer goals. Practice this sequence on every attack and you will have greater success - guaranteed.
The photos in the link below are from the main learning station.
The forward angle targets we photgraphed include the bottom of the circles, the face-off dots, the face-off dot just outside the blue line and the centre of the net as derived by the hashmarks and the centre ice face-off dot.
Examine yourself and note the difference the adjustment from the red goal line out to the blue goal line makes (approx 14"). It is important to take that extra depth and play big when the situation is warranted. For some of the smaller goalies a further depth adjustment might be needed in selct situations to cover more net.
Thanks again everyone and I will see you in a couple of weeks, 1 pm in the video room...
