Sometimes I find myself getting too far out of the net, thinking I need to do so to cover the angles. Then when the play gets closer to the net after a pass/rebound, I'm way too far out to be effective. I assume this is just due to inexperience and a lack of 'net awareness'. Since I am a big guy, I'd like to know how much net I cover at various depths.

Dave, is there any chance that this might be covered in the next 4 sessions? Even if we could just take a couple quick snapshots that I could look at later on, this would be helpful.

Sorry if this is basic stuff to everyone.

Paul, I am just developing a laser based angle system that I will be using to help with angles and depth.

This issue is not 'basic' - it is absolutely critical to success and we will be delving deeper into it during week #1.

Support using pictures taken from a pucks perspective is important and will be used to support what we are teaching.

Wellsie

PS: If anyone else has things they want covered, now would be a great time to let me know...

Can't wait for tomorrow. I have a tournament this week and I could use the practice/reminders.

Young Ben Calma of the Jr. A North York Rangers was the proud recipient of jersey #1 yesterday during a private lesson with me...

I'm really happy with the quality of the jersey and screens as well as the size. They are roomy but not stupidly huge like the RBK goalie cuts I have...

Another fun and informative session. Not to mention the jerseys look great! I'll be whoring my jersey all over the rinks of Brampton starting this weekend in my tourney!

Yeah good times today - thanks for the skate.

2 hours is perfect - long enough to get everything in, but any longer and my heart would probably explode.

Post Photos - April 13th Clinic

Thanks everyone for a fun session this week.

The main theme was Positional Play and the tactical emphasis was on forward angle reads and using proper initial depth.

I challenge each of you to start using a simplified process that includes the following steps:

1) Make the initial play read and adjust to your basic starting depth
2) Adjust for the major angle
3) Re-read the developing play and make small angle adjustments
4) Adjust depth in or out if needed
5) Make the save using the technique that best allows you to...
6) Control the rebound effectively
7) Recover and reset for the next shot sequence

As we discussed during the video and classroom analysis, this entire process happens in a fraction of time and must become a subconcious action, much like checking the blindspot when you drive.

A simplified depth and angle approach allows you to read and anticipate, allowing you to play a more patient read and react style. Square, set, on angle saves allow you to control the puck and minimize rebounds which will lead to fewer goals. Practice this sequence on every attack and you will have greater success - guaranteed.

The photos in the link below are from the main learning station.

The forward angle targets we photgraphed include the bottom of the circles, the face-off dots, the face-off dot just outside the blue line and the centre of the net as derived by the hashmarks and the centre ice face-off dot.

Examine yourself and note the difference the adjustment from the red goal line out to the blue goal line makes (approx 14"). It is important to take that extra depth and play big when the situation is warranted. For some of the smaller goalies a further depth adjustment might be needed in selct situations to cover more net.

Thanks again everyone and I will see you in a couple of weeks, 1 pm in the video room...
