I can't wait to get my new to me Vortek gear

I just won the Vortek VK5/VK6 demo set that they made for Mika Noronen.

They don't match my Leafs inspired jersey, but I don't care!

Hello Jim

What do you mean by 'won'? Was this a contest or an auction?

Just wondering.

Thanks.

You're going to like that set, man. I demo'd it way back when and loved those pads. Uber light, flexy, comfy....I was very VERY sad when they said they were dropping the VK6 from the production line-up.

IIRC, that set went up on eBay, but I can't be certain.

Sounds good to me.

They can't get here soon enough even though I'm slated to be back on the ice until September 11th.........

It wasn't "dropped", it never actually existed.

Dave Agatone made that one set of pads for Mika Noronen when he was in Buffalo a couple years ago. For a while they were going to revise the design and sell it as the vk6, but it never happened for a variety of reasons.

That's a more accurate description of what happened. I shouldn't have used the word 'dropped', as the pads never made it to production really.

Truth be told, the only differences I saw on the surface between the VK5's and VK6's were the 2 boot straps as opposed to 1 (might have been at Mika's request), the toe cap (again, could have been Mika's request), and the full wrap knee rolls. The knee stacks were velcroed together due to NHL regs, but anyone can do that to their pads. Internally, there might have been a difference, but we may never know that.

I had my first game in the gear last night and things went well.

The pads were 1" shorter than the Heaton Helite-Z Pros that I wore last season. Add in the fact that they are 1" narrower and the pads are a lot lighter than my previous pads and it felt like it.

When I was trying on the trapper before the game, I was slightly worried. But, in the game, things were fine. I didn't even notice the smaller gloves when the game was on.

The only change I'm going to make is adding some thigh boards. I have a pair of SherWood lexan boards in the mail.

The only piece of gear I see myself wanting to replace anytime soon are my skates.
