Newbie with V7 needs help

Hi All,

Playing hockey for 30 years..............started goalie 18 mths ago. I got a set of DR 6.2 gear and well.....you get what you pay for. Excellent learning set to make sure I would enjoy goaltending.

I been lurking here for quite a while following the Vortek stuff. Seems they are putting the customer first and that tips the scale for me.

Thanks for all the info you guys provided and I have a few questions.

I perfer the black part of the pad on the ice during b-fly. Does the Black weave or black work best? (ie) Is there any durability issue with weave? Do you slide slower with weave material. (Yes, I know it is not like a basket weave). The DR stuff I have has weave and it seems to slide slower once the ice get snowy)

The thighboards are listed as an option. Is there anyone who can comment on the mobilty difference with both setups on Vortek pads? I currently use them, but I was planning on switching as the t-board keep hooking on my pants. ( I am tired of fooling around with them.)

Here are a couple of colour schemes I was working on. If anyone has a smilar scheme can you post pics, the customizer does not do the pads justice.

Thanks,

Cod

I have used both black and black weave one previous sets of pads and have not noticed any difference as far as sliding goes. Durability wise, I play both ice and roller with the same pads and the weave seems to be holding up better. Much better in fact.

I pulled the thighboards off my pair of VK5's, it allows me to get my knees in closer but I had to get a nice heavy duty pair of knee pads (BROWN) since the boards were really good for protecting the knee area.

The weave vs. normal jenpro debate... It's been discussed before at length and I don't think we ever came up with a definitive conclusion. So you're pretty much going to get peoples personal opinions and mixed ones from everyone.

My thought process is that the normal jenpro is best for touching the ice, it's smoother and without the little notches that you find in the weave pattern, it'll probably slide better on ice (though I don't have any proof or personal experience with the weave on surfaces that touch the ice).

Either way, the difference will likely be minor, so I really don't think you have to be concerned about it.

As for the thigh boards... I played with mine on my VK5's for about 6 months, and found that they would get stuck in the bottom of my pants a couple of times a game and they bugged me. I have good knee protection in my XXX pants and felt comfortable taking off the thighboards. I will never wear thighboards again...

That being said, they come with the pads, so try playing with them for a few games and see how they work out for you. With your gear setup, they might work out great.

Really like that color scheme. My son's VK7 pads and blocker are the exact match except with no weave. I actually used his gear in my game last night as he is out of town. You are going to love this gear!

I have a set of VK7 gloves on order as we speak. They are mostly silver with a little black and white fangs. Can't wait to see them in early '08.

Enjoy.

I have taken some pics. My original pads are DR 6.2 (12"). As you can tell, I do not seem to get them all the way shut. However, it is extremely rare for a puck to go through. The thighboards seem to stop anything that goes through.

My dilema, I ordered 32" + 1.5" thighrise V7's. From the pics, does that seem right or should I have gone larger/smaller on the thighrise.

Maybe I am just freaking out for no reason.

PS.....How cool is the buff / pitt game.

PSS...Marc, if you see this please feel free to comment.

I would go with a plus two instead of the 1.5. Your will adjust to the higher thigh rise.

I also had DR 6.2's before getting VK5's. I went with +2 on the VK5's and don't regret it at all. I had no problems adjusting to the taller thighrise and can now close up the 5-hole better.
