Son's Order Has Arrived! Yahoo

Hi All,

Yes my son's order has come atlast. He loves the color and I am impressed with the quality. The glove at first was an issue but now he love it after it got broken in. I am looking though for some help.

1. My son laterally was very good, with the new pads he now avoids the butterfly slide. He says that it is harder with the new pads as the old pads he slid very easy. Is there some I can do to help the pads and make them slide easier?

2. My son could normally get up and down very quickly, with the new pads he seems now to flounder a bit with the new pads. They are lighter, but I believe that because they are stiffer it makes it more diffcult to flex them so he can resposition himself to get up. Any suggestions on how to help him?

It'll take a while. What pads did he have before these? If there's an immense difference, it's going to effect him for a while. He just needs to continue to get used to the feel of them and he'll be fine.

May sound like a horrible answer, but he should keep playing with his pads. It seems that the pads are not broken in, so the pad is very stiff.

A few ways to break in the pads are:

1. Practice. If your son keeps playing with the pads, it'll eventually break in.

2.Bend it on the knee roll and place it under the team bench while your son is in the dressing room. I makes the pad become less stiff on the knee, and could allow him to move laterally.

There are way more ways, but Google is your friend.

Ask him if he wants a stiff or soft pad and if he says hed like a soft (more broken in feeling) pad then stick them under a table, they will break in easier and have a nice curve. What were his previous pads made of Weave or Jenpro, and what are these ones made of ( i am assuming jenpro)?

The new pads are the weave navy blue. His old pads are Reebok 6K. He has an important game this Friday evening as it is the finals. I am considering putting him back in the old pads for this game. Good Idea or bad idea?

Yes currently I am considering leaving him in the old pads for games and only using the new ones in practice.

I have taken the toe strings and tied them around the pad bending them at the knee. I am hoping this helps.

The gloves are broken in very quickly and he loves them.

Wow, i ve never heard of problems with weave sliding worse over jenpro. If he is more comfortable in the 6ks, then you should definatley put him back in them. Maybe take him out on a pond with them so he can get used to them. As a general rule don't buy goalies new stuff during playoff time because these problems can arise.

Yea I was hoping to get the pads sooner than last week but I agree with you. He is excited about the new equipment but I am going to put him in the old stuff for the final game tomorrow evening. I know the new pads are going to be awesome but it will take some time. He has a goalie camp starting next week on synthetic ice so I am hoping this may the right oppertunity for him to break in new pads.

Keep him in his old gear for the rest of the season. Once the new stuff is brokem all should be ok.

What kind of pads did he get?

Actually you should not tie the toe strings around the pad. That isn't good for them. It will leave marks on the pad, and I don't believe it is good for the foam where it isn't a natural flex on them.

The best thing to do (and Marc would most likely suggest this too) when you're son isn't using the pads, store them toe in the air. This will then put the weight of the pad onto the thigh rise and will give the pad a nice curve.

If you need the glove to break a little more, run a tea kettle and then run the steam through the glove. Have your son put the glove on (once it cools down a bit, don't want him to burn his hand) and have him open and close the glove. That worked amazing with my VK7 glove.

I am sure once he gets the pads worked in he will love them. It will just take getting use to them. They will slide great and movement should be just as good once the pad it broke in. Quality wise it will be way better then the RBK 6k he was using.

Hope this helps you out some.

The pads will definitely take some getting use to if you are coming from a 6 K.

The are quite stiff when you first get them and the landing gear is very hard as well, which would provide to be an issue for a younger kid who lacks the leg strength of a teenager or adult.

I just got mine on Tues. night and went to noon our drop in on Wed. to use them. Tues. evening I put a bend in them and put them under my kitchen table to try to work a bit of an S curve in them and get the boot in the right poistion (the pads come almost like a flat plank out of the box because they have to be straightened out to put them in it).

They worked great for me, no rotation problems at all. Like I said, however, the landing gear is pretty hard, so my knees were sore yesterday (I wouldn't want it to be soft right away though, or they will break down way too fast).

The glove was easy for me to use right out of the box. I played around with it a bit the night before, and when the puck is in the other end, I keep it closed (holding it against the top of my pad) to help break it in faster.
